IT'S TIME TO RACE!!
February 15, 2003
Tim Arre Wins Richie Evans Memorial at New Smyrna
Samsula, Fla - Bones are tired, clothes are dirty, little sleep, alot of work is what night 8 of the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing sees. Some teams have used up both cars they brought, all the motors and are headed 'home, tired but replenished in the need for speed.

The Allison Legacy cars had a 50 lap event but since I had not rooster for the night, that race will be reported in the night 9 report.

Thirty four FASTRUCKS took the green flag for their 50 lap event with Jeff Guilbault on the pole. Guilbault jumped to the early lead followed by Paul Grynewicz. Just two laps into green flag racing, the red came out for James Wright III who made contact with the frontstretch wall.
Wright was fine but saw his night end early.

Guilbault held the point on the restart with Todd Bontreger showing his muscle in the second place postion followed by Paul Grynewicz, Tom Carter, and Danny Glover. Lap 7 Eddie Moran brought out the yellow as he spun in turn 4 ending up facing the oncoming trucks. As he watched his fellow competitors pass him safely without hitting him, Moran corrected his truck in the right direction and rejoined the race.

Bontrager is the leader followed by Guilbault, Carter, Grynewicz and Glover. Just as the racing is getting hot and heavy, Brandon Anderson brought out the yellow for a spin in turns 1 and 2. Bobby Owens makes a very good safe as he gets very squirelly going towards the turn 4 wall but corrects the truck and keeps on truckin.

Jeff Firestine brought out the next yellow on lap 28 as he spun on the backstretch. The race restarted with Bontrager in the lead followed by Guilbault, Carter, Glover, and Jimmy Gill. John Mitchell and Mason Love are going side-by-side as they fight for the sixth place position giving the crowd a thrill. Love looks high and low trying to shake Gill from the fifth place position. On lap 41, as the two are racing hard, Gill gets off the track and takes a wild ride down the frontstretch inside on the grass but gets the truck going and returns to the action.

Bontrager holds on for the win followed by Jeff Guilbault, Danny Glover, Tom Carter, and Mason Love.

Don Tomson sat on the pole for the 30 lap Super Late Model event and quickly took the point followed by Jack Landis, Louis Mechalides, Scott Hantz and James Powell III. By lap 8, Landis had been knocked out of the top five and Jr. Hanley began showing his muscle. Hanley was working his way to the lead when on lap 18, Jeff Emery spun in the bottom of turn 4 bringing out the yellow.

On the restart, Powell spins coming off the frontstretch into turn 1 with Bob Fox and Chris Fontaine getting into Powell. The race is red flagged as Powell's machine is towed into the pits and done for the night. Fontaine received only minor damage to the front end of his machine but Fox was done for the night after having a good night.

With no more cautions, Hantz takes the lead on the green and is looking for his first victory when he finds a very determined Hanley right on his tail. Hantz and Hanley put on a great show for the crowd as they fight nose to tail for the lead with Hanley taking the point on lap 27. Tomson and McLeod are now in a dog fight for fifth as they go side-by-side for a few laps with McLeod taking over fifth and Tomson to sixth.

Hanley takes the win followed by Scott Hantz, Louis Mechalides, Wayne Anderson, and B.J. McLeod. The Super Lates will run a 100 lap event, the Florida Cracker, Saturday night.

Tim Arre sat on the pole for the 100 lap Richie Evans Memorial and quickly jumped to the lead followed by Rob Summers, J.R. Bertuccio, Mike Fitch and Ed Flemke, Jr. George Boch brought out the yellow on lap 1 when he hit the frontstretch wall and was done for the night.

Arre maintains the point on the restart with Mike Fitch getting shuffled back and Summers taking over fourth and Donny Lia in fifth. By lap 12, Ed Flemke, Jr. has moved into third. Lap 16, Eric Beers retired to the pits with yet more engine problems. Jim Willis joins Beers in the pits on lap 24, also done for the night.

Lap 30, Flemke puts the medal to the pedal and takes away the point from Arre with Summers in third, Bertuccio, Lia and Ted Christopher in sixth. Bertuccio tries but fails to take third from Summers.

Dave Roys Jr. brought out the yellow on lap 35 as he spun in turn 4.
The race was restarted on lap 38 with Flemke holding the point. By lap 46, Lia has taken the second spot followed by Summers, Bertuccio and Christopher now in fifth and Arre sixth.

Lap 48 Steve Whitt spun in turns 3 and 4 bringing out the yellow with drivers making pit stops for tires and gas. At this point, it is obvious that Christopher is having some kind of problem with his machine and he goes in and out of the pits a number of times.

On the restart, after pit stops, Summers holds the point. Lap 62, Roys brought out the yellow as he spun on the frontstretch. On the restart, Summers slipped back as Flemke now holds the lead with Arre, Bertuccio, Whitt and Evainitstie in fifth.

Lap 87, Flemke goes back to sixth and Arre now holds the point with Bertuccio, Evainitske, Whitt and Tom Baldwin in the top five. With only two laps to go, Lia brought out the yellow on lap 98 as he spun in the bottom of turns 3 and 4. Arre maintains his lead and takes the checkers as he wins the Richie Evans Memorial followed by J.R.
Bertuccio, Evainitske, Whitt and Baldwin.

It was the Jason Boyd Show as he lead the Late Model 30 lap feature from green to checkered. Jerry Symons tried but was unsuccessful to take the point.

Kirk Hooker and Jerry Artuso put on the best show for the crowd as they went door handle to door handle fighting for the fourth place position.
On lap 13, Artuso wins the battle and takes over fourth putting Hooker fifth.

Going to the checkered, Terry Jones found himself sitting in the entrance to pit road after a good run and he spun. Boyd takes the win followed by Jerry Symons, Mike Murphy, Jerry Artuso and Kirk Hooker.

Jason Boyd sat on the pole for the FL/IMCA Open Wheel Modified 20 lap event but it was Jerry Symons who took the point and lead from green to checkered followed by Brad May, Jason Boyd, Matthew Wheeler and Chit Morrison.

Jerry Artuso and D.J. Hoelzle started in the rear of the field but both were making their ways to the front in a hurry. By lap 6, Artuso was in sixth and Hoelzle in seventh. As Hoelzle goes for the fifth place position on lap 17, he spins high in turns 1 and 2 dusting the wall. Hoelze rejoins the field in the rear for bringing out the yellow.

Symons holds the point on the restart with May, Boyd, Artuso and Steve Johanack in fifth. Johanack seems to slow losing his fifth place position and Artuso passes Boyd taking over third. Symons takes the win followed by Brad May, Jerry Artuso, Jason Boyd and Chuck Reen.

John Webber had the point for the Sportsman feature event but it was Dale Clouser who lead all 15 laps and took the win.

The race was red flagged on lap 3 when Paul Colgan had problems on the frontstretch. Terry Wright got into the mix and somehow ended up on his side. Wright was fine but his machine was toast.

The only other caution came in lap 8 for Kenny Hellyer who spun in turns 1 and 2 after running in the fourth place position. Hellyer rejoined the field in the rear with Clouser taking the win followed by Ron Lufcy, John Webber, Chris Peludat, and Jimmy Elliott, Jr.

Night 9 will see the Florida Cracker 100 for the Super Late Models plus racing action in Lates, NASCAR Tour Type/SK Mods, FL/IMCA Mods, Super Stock, Allison Legacy and FASTRUCKS. Racing action begins at 7:30 p.m.
