SAMSULA, FLORIDA – Wayne Anderson of Wildwood, FL won the 30 lap Super Late Model feature Saturday night after an early tangle of cars in the 37th Annual World Series of Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna Speedway placed him in the lead.
Keeping the lead for Anderson was a matter of keeping a close second place finishing Freddie Query of Mooresville, N.C. and the rest of the strong Super Late Model field behind him.
Anderson in his Carolina Printing Chevrolet took over in lap five when early leader Junior Hanley of Campbellville, Ontario and James Powell III of Astor, FL were sent to the rear of a 33 car field for bringing out the caution after keeping too close of company.
Jake Keaton of Barboursville, W. VA slammed into the front straightaway wall in lap 10 slowing the field. Keaton was not injured
On the restart, Anderson led followed by Query and B.J. McCloud of Wauchula. FL. Terry Shoppenhorst was fourth and Donald Chisholm was fifth.
The top five in lap 20 remained the same with Anderson still leading and appearing stronger. Query followed in second and McCloud was third. Rounding out the top five were Shoppenhorst and Chisholm.
Query started to reel in Anderson slowly in lap 26 and the top five would change again as Shoppenhorst met the wall in a home stretch accident with Louie Mechalides of Tyngsboro, MA. Shoppenhorst’s car was done for the evening with severe front end damage and Mechalides continued on.
Anderson held off Query crossing the stripe. McCloud was third, Chisholm fourth and Randy Gentry of Easley, S.C. fifth.
NASCAR TOUR TYPE AND SK MODIFIEDS
Ted Christopher of Plainesville, CT driving his Sherm’s – Sunoco 2003 Troyer made it two straight Modified race wins Saturday night during World Series racing at New Smyrna Speedway.
Bo Gunning of Bethleham, CT won the SK Modified division with a strong win finishing ninth overall in his TS Haulers Billy The Kid Troyer 355.
Christopher once again had too much for the starting 25 car Modified field as he once again ran away with the show during the 25 lap feature.
George Boch of Franklin Square, N.Y. took the early lead in lap two. Boch was followed by George Kent of Horseheads, N.Y. and Tim Arre of Toms River, N.J. Friday night’s third place finisher Rob Summers of Manchester, CT. was fourth. Christopher was now a quick sixth.
Summers moved to second in lap three going to the inside of George Kent of Horseheads, N.Y. Boch still looked strong with Summers after him, Christopher was now third.
In lap 10, Christopher was looking for room to maneuver his car by Summers, but was slowed by a lap 10 caution as Kevin Goodale spun out by himself.
Summers slipped a little and dropped out of the top five. Christopher now made his move in lap 11 to the lead and he was followed by Boch, Kent and Ed Flemke Jr. of Berlin, CT.
By lap 15, Christopher enjoyed a 10 car lead as Boch and Kent contested the second spot. Kent would maintain the advantage.
Christopher still looked very strong in lap 20 with Kent trying to keep pace with him. Arre had worked his way to third slickly.
Christopher crossed the stripe with no challenges. Kent finished second followed by Arre.
Rounding out the top five was Boch and Mike Fitch of Edgewater, FL.
IMCA/FLORIDA MODIFIEDS
Jerry Symons of New Smyrna Beach, FL won his second straight World Series race on New Smyrna Speedway winning the 20 lap IMCA/Florida Modified race in his Gene Kelly Roofing ride.
Symons took the lead in lap one with Brad May of Orlando, FL and Jason Boyd of Orlando, FL following. Mark Vandevender of Ormond Beach, FL was fourth and Jared Allison of Sharpes, FL was fifth.
Boyd pressured May strongly out of turn four for second as Symons quickly opened a seven car length lead.
A caution slowed things down when a caution unfurled in lap seven when Dink Sullivan leaned on the front straightaway wall.
On the restart it was Symons, May and Boyd in the top three. Vandevender was fourth and D. J. Hoelzle was fifth. Boyd finally took second from May in turn one on the lap seven restart.
At Halfway, Symons was still firmly in charge followed by Boyd and May. Hoelzle was fourth and Allison fifth.
May took advantage of a god restart taking back second from Boyd and Hoelzle was now third. In lap 13, it was now Symons, May, Hoelzle, Boyd and a now strong running Jerry Artuso.
The running order of the top five changed again when Boyd pitted after making a pass in lap 15 and May with apparent brake problems in lap 17 also pitted.
In lap 17, it was Symons, Artuso, Hoelzle, Chad Pierce of Orlando, FL and Steve Johanneck of Litchfield, MN.
Symons crossed the finish line followed by Artuso and Hoelzle.
Rounding out the top five were Pierce and Johanneck.
LATE MODELS
Tim Russell of Apopka, FL captured a 20 lap feature Late Model World Series victory on New Smyrna Speedway outdoing a 27 car starting field and taking the point during lap 13 on the one-half mile track.
Larry Osteen of Clermont, FL was in charge during lap three taking over in turn one on a restart. Three cautions during the opening circuit slowed things down for the flying field.
Osteen running up front was being watched carefully by Russell in lap 11 and John Crumrine of Akron, Ohio was third and Jason Boyd of Orlando, FL was fourth.
Russell took the top from Osteen in lap 13 and the winner looked definitely in charge of the field.
Boyd passed Crumrine for third in lap 17, but the race for the stripe belonged to the fleet running Russell.
Russell took the checkered flag followed by Osteen and Boyd.
Rounding out the top five were Crumrine and Tim Clark of Cocoa, FL.
