BARBERVILLE, Fla. - Jason Johnson conserved his Hoosier Tires and outran Craig Dollansky Friday night at Volusia Speedway Park to win the Haulmark All Star sprint car 20 lap feature. Johnson, operating out of Eunice, Louisiana and wheeling Al Harrison's Kistler powered Eagle Chassis, took over from early leader Fred Rahmer on lap four and led the rest of the ten mile distance on the half-mile oval.
"Most young guys aren't very patient on their right rear tires on a slick track," Johnson stated in victory lane, referring to his careful driving style on the abrasive track surface, which earned him his first 2003 win for the Harrison team.
With Rahmer starting on the pole in the Harz Racing No. 88, Johnson was alongside with Dollansky and Paul McMahan in row two. Canada's Ryan Coniam spun in turn four on lap one and collected Terry McCarl, Mike Erdley and Jimmy Hawley. Hawley was the only car to return while Sport Allen and Shane Stewart changed tires and went to the rear for the restart. Rahmer led the next three rounds with Johnson in tow, and then Johnson grabbed the lead on lap four just before a fifth lap caution for a stalled Kelly Kinser.
Johnson was now on top over fifth starter Lance Dewease, Dollansky, sixth starting Danny Lasoski and Rahmer. Johnson continued to conserve his tires and remain on top until lap 18 when Lasoski blew his tire while running fourth, bringing out the caution flag again. For the restart it was Johnson, Dewease, Dollansky, Chad Kemenah, up from seventh starting spot and Rahmer. Dollansky got past Dewease for second but could not pass Johnson and that was how they finished.
Dewease was third in the Al Hamilton No. 77, with Kemenah fourth in the Harble Motorsports Kistler-Eagle. Rahmer was fifth ahead of 13th starting Joey Saldana who was Thursday night's winner. Dean Jacobs was seventh in the Ray Pullins Fisher-Maxim after starting 12th, ahead of Raymond Hensley, 10th starter Jeff Shepard and Ohio's Jim Nier in his familiar No. 00.
The Crown Battery heat fell to Jimmy Hawley, the B&B Products heat went to Bill Rose, the Engler Machine and Tool heat was won by Shane Stewart and the TP Wings heat fell to Mike Erdley. Chad Kemenah won the United Aluminum Window Sales & Consulting B Main. Huggins Cams fast qualifier Danny Lasoski set a new track record with his 13.187 second lap, breaking Kasey Kahne's year old mark of 13.201. Kahne had his left rear tire come off the car at the start of his time trial run and he hit the fence in turns three and four. He was not injured. Greg Hodnett flipped in the second heat. He was also okay but finished for the evening. In the B Main Daron Clayton hit the front stretch hard on the last lap and tore out some of the catch fence. He was not injured but the fence and car were.
"America's Series, The Haulmark All Star Circuit of Champions" will present a slate of 80 sprint car race dates in 2003 from February to October in action at 31 speedways in 17 states. America's favorite dirt track series is in its' 23rd year and has presented fans with the largest average car count and greatest number of different race winners in the United States over the past two decades.
