IT'S TIME TO RACE!!
February 5, 2003
Francis Grabs East Bay Late Model Opener
Steve Francis of Ashland,KY opened up the Renegade DirtCar Racing Series 2003 season capturing the $5,000 to win feature event Monday at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa,FL.

The 1996, 1997 and 1998 Renegade champion powered into the lead from his pole starting position holding off Rick Eckert by 2 seconds on the opening night of the "27th Late Model Winternationals".

"It's been a long time since we won a race here at East Bay", stated Francis. "We got lucky tonight. We qualified like tenth quick and some of the other guy's had problems in their heat races which worked out to our advantage. It put us on the pole for the dash and when we won that we got the pole for the feature. This track really threw everyone a curveball tonight. Everybody went too soft on tires, including us. It was a good thing the feature was 40 laps tonight. I don't think we had enough rubber left to make 50".

Trailing Francis and Eckert were Jimmy Mars in third with Brian Birkhofer fourth and Shannon Babb fifth. Completing the top were Davey Johnson in sixth followed by Billy Moyer, Jackie Boggs, Mike Balzano and Don O'Neal.

Francis quickly put his Valvoline/Mopar Performance Parts/Hoosier Racing Tire/Rocket Chassis/Stanton Racing Engines No. M15 Mark Richards Racing Dodge Intrepid R/T into the lead at the drop of the green flag Mars, Dale McDowell, Eckert and Birkhofer trailing at the end of the first lap.

Caution on lap 1 for a four-car tangle involving Jeremy Miller, Kenny Pettyjohn, Scott James and Billy Ogle Jr. slowed the pace. One lap after going back to green Eckert shot past McDowell for second and began to pressure Mars for the second. The races final caution flew on lap 9 when Donnie Moran limped to a stop with a flat left rear tire.

On the restart, Eckert blasted into second and began to put heavy pressure on Francis as Birkhofer moved past McDowell for fourth. McDowell lost the fifth spot to Johnson on lap 19. At the halfway point, Francis had Eckert all over him with Mars, Birkhofer and now Babb trailing with Johnson in sixth trailed by Moyer, R.J. Conley, Balzano and Boggs.

For the next ten laps Francis searched high and low to find his way past heavy lapped traffic with Eckert right with him. Francis cleared the lapped traffic on lap 32 which allowed him to open up his lead on Eckert which he stretched over the final 8 circuits.

The $29,000 event drew 87 drivers to the semi-banked 1/3rd mile with Eckert topping the field during CARRERA SHOCKS "Challenge the Clock" Time Trials with a fast lap of 14.837 seconds. Taking BRODIX,INC. heat race wins were Babb, Birkhofer, Johnson, Anthony Rushing Jr., Conley and Balzano. Grabbing the MASTERSBILT RACE CARS "B" Mains were Pettyjohn, Randle Chupp and James while Francis copped the ISKY RACING CAMS dash.
