Franklin Takes Hialeah Late Model Event

HIALEAH, Fla. - Mike Franklin, Jr ran to a wire to wire victory in easily winning the 30th running of the season closing Marion Edwards, Jr. Memorial late model 50 lap feature Saturday night at Hialeah Speedway.

Franklin began the night as the fastest qualifier then drew the pole position on the redraw and was off and running when the green flag flew. A first lap crash eliminated David Flowers and Mike Finn and Eddie Hamby was also a crash victim early on.

Joe Winchell and Larry Rogero, both former winners of the Edwards event, gave chase but came up short in finishing second and third respectively. Mark Keeteman and Steve Lamb rounded out the top five runners, all on the lead lap.

Robert Goldsbury led wire to wire for his first street stock win of the season but it was no cake walk. Mike Orth pressured Goldsbury in the closing laps and the two made contact coming to the checkers with Goldsbury sliding across the stripe prior to making contact with the wall as Orth slid to the infield grass. Fred Schenk claimed third money over new point champ Chalo DeCastro and Bob Hogan.

The 30 lap mini stock main was another shoot out with David Russell gaining the lead on the final lap for the win, his 14th here this season. Tim Jones, new champion Kenny Strong, Buddy Sizemore and Scott Rogers shuffled in the closing laps but crossed the line tightly bunched.

A huge 29 car field started the 30 lap cyclone run but up front it was David Drury all the way for his first win this season. Ryan Coyle ran one of the best events of his brief career for second money over Roger Pfau, Lynn Reid and Frank Kelliher.

Billy Harmon topped the kids Hornets A feature over Zane Reid, brother Kelsey Reid, Tommy Styer and Shannon Welter while the B feature was rained out. Doug Capps won the abbreviated mini cup feature.
