Side-By-Side Racing Highlights Bronson Features

(Bronson, FL; 10/21/2000) Two abreast racing is a rarity. When two cars run side by side for the lead for several laps, it's even more a rarity. When all divisions feature the same activity, it's almost an impossibility! This was the case last Saturday night at the Bronson bullring when all divisions saw the lead change hands several times before determining the winner.

Jerome Brown had the Cheifland Express hooked up and served notice he wants the Pure Stock track championship when he won both his heat race and the feature. He ran side-by-side with Gerry Hodge after, Jason Holbrook, the early leader, spun coming out of turn four.

Hodge continued a strong challenge for the lead until lap 17, when his Custom Vinyl Lettering Buick smacked the outside retaining wall and picked up the uncoveted Bronson Stripe. He was able to hold on for three more laps and finished second to Jerome (Brown).

"That was racing!" exclaimed Gerry after the race. When asked if he hurt the car any, he just shrugged philosophically and said, "Naw, we'll just clean 'er up a little and check out the front end; we'll be back!" You can bet the rest of the fans will be too, when they see racing like this. David Kidd had a good run in the Dr. Jay's Auto Clinic entry from Williston and finished third.

The Super Stock guys were ready to go, before they made it to the feature. This announcer, barely had time to call off the driver's names and sponsors before they hot-lapped and lined up for the feature. Wesley Keller, Doc Batson, and Al Bouchard all battled for the lead, and once again, the fans were treated to side-by-side racing between Doc Batson and Wesley Keller. Al Bouchard had his 92 Firebird poised and ready to strike as he followed these two through slower traffic. The opportunity never presented itself, though and he had to settle for third, while Batson finished second to Keller. "The car was perfect, tonight," said Al. "I just couldn't find a hole to make a clean pass. We're there and we'll be back." This exciting group of cars will compete in this week's show as well as the season finale on Sunday, November 5.

Tater Stalnaker, David Westrich, and Larry Goolsby were hot at it for the win in the Mini-Stock feature. Westrich pulled alongside Stalnaker several times, but wasn't able to make the pass stick. Larry Goolsby played the waiting game and looked for an opportunity if Westrich or Stalnaker made a mistake. It did not happen that way and Larry came home third. "The car was real loose tonite, anyway," said Larry after the race. "I don't know if we would have had enough to get them. We'll be back." He will be back, along with the rest of the Mini-Stocks as they join the rest of the Bronson Race Series in their last two events.

Dennis Archinal and Don Hess, racing out of the Orlando area, put on a whale of a show as they, too, battled side by side in Dwarf Car action. They traded places several times throughout the feature. These cars darted and weaved and thrilled the crowd as a blanket could have covered the first three positions. First, it was Archinal and Hess side by side for the lead. Then, Burback closed in and took his shot at a position. He grabbed second from Hess on lap 16, and came up just a little short as he tried to catch Archinal. The finish saw Archinal cross the line just ahead of Burback and Hess.

Be sure to be with us for our two remaining races this season. The first is this Saturday night at 7:30 and then the Gator 60 on Sunday November 5, at 1:00 PM. The high dollar thunder and lightning Late Model Sportsman cars will battle for their 60-lap championship. Then we will crown all of our division and track champions. The Bronson Race Series will be in action, too, so a full and exciting day is planned for all.
