Register Notches First Pure Stock Win at Bronson

The Classic Car Series came a callin' at the Bronson Motor Speedway Saturday night, with David Nunes of Orlando coming home the winner. The series highlighted the evening's events, which saw plenty of classic racing from the Bronson Race Series as well. In addition to Nunes, Wesley Keller, Tater Stallnaker, and Billy Register were all winners as well.

Nunes led from start to finish to win the Classic Car feature and had heavy pursuit from two other drivers as Ed Yates and Rodney Yeary were hot on his tail all feature long. Yates had a good shot at a pass for the lead, when his car got tagged from behind in turn two, sending him on a wild slide down the backstretch. The rest of the field scattered to avoid a bigger wreck. Yates scooted into the pits for some quick repairs and rejoined the field at the rear on lap #8. From there, he staged a strong run to challenge Rod Yeary and eventual winner Nunes for the front spot. He would finish third in the event that the crowd had looked forward to seeing for so long. What a great class of cars!

As I have said a couple of times before in this column, there is nothing "mini" about this feisty class of cars. The Mini-Stocks run some really quick times and always put on a wheel-to-wheel show. Tater Stalnaker was the winner in his Video Central entry from Williston, while Dave Westrich finished second, after a brilliant drive from the rear in his #6 entry. William Stalnaker had his BMW "hooked up" and was challenging for the lead, when he was tagged from behind by Westrich in turn four on lap #8. The hard-charging field of cars behind them scrambled to avoid further contact, but Larry Goolsby got caught up in the pile-up, with minor front end damage. He was able to continue and finished fourth. Westrich and Stallnaker went to the rear of the pack and both drivers did a good job to move forward again. In addition to Westrich's finish, William Stalnaker managed a fifth place finish.

Billy Register notched his first Pure Stock win of the season in his #99 Camaro Saturday night, after holding off a hard charge by points leader Jerome Brown. Jerome had a real scare on lap 6 of the feature, when he and Jason Holbrook exited turn four early in the race. Holbrook got into the side of Jerome and the #25 Chiefland Express headed for the wall on the main straight. Hard contact gave Jerome the not so coveted Bronson stripe and a "whitewall" tire he really didn't need.

"The car took a really hard hit," said Jerome. "Dad really builds 'em tough," he said, referring to his father, Rodney Brown, who helped Jerome and his brother Barret, build the car.

On the restart, Jerome worked his way through the field in beautiful fashion to contend for the lead. However, the night belonged to Register, affectionately called "Wasserman" as he held on for the win. David Kidd was third in the Dr. Jay's entry and Gerry Hodge finished fourth in his #37 Buick with an additional sponsor on board, Gregory's Heat and Air. Custom Vinyl Lettering and Craft's by Joyce also adorn this well-prepared car.

The Super Stock action was "hot and heavy" in this wild class, as Wesley Keller drove his #34 A+ Air Conditioning Camaro to a win. It didn't take long for the fireworks to begin as Brody Giddens, Wesley Keller, Dave Westrich, and Arthur Conquest battled for lead positions. Conquest got into the back of Giddens in turn two and spun him around, as Wesley (Keller) scooted by on the inside.

"I think we all shared a little paint," said Arthur after the race. Fast work on the part of his Rockoustic Systems/Bronson Ace Hardware pit crew, changed a right front tire and got him back into the race after the incident. Gary Southard, driving Doc Batson's #4 Camaro was third in this exciting race.

Be sure to be with us this Saturday night when the Late Models return to the bullring for their 50-lap Dash for Cash. This exciting race will be in addition to the Bronson Race Series that runs every Saturday night. Gates open at 5:30, with racing at 7:30. See ya'll there.
