Photo Finish in Bronson Mini Stocks

by Gil Peck
BRONSON, FL (September 30, 2000) — Dave Westrich, driving his pretty # 38 Monte Carlo won the 50-lap Super Stock Classic Saturday night at the Bronson Motor Speedway. " We finally beat the weatherman for a cool comfortable night, one fan was heard to say." It may have been cool and comfortable in the grandstands, but on the track the action was HOT! Westrich had company all night long in the form of Joey Hunt . Hunt was on Westrich's tail on each of the resarts, but couldn't quite get the car under Dave (Westrich) in the corners. In the meantime, Arthur Conquest and Robbie Pedrick had their own battle going for third place. Several time they ran side by side for an entire lap. It was Conquest who prevailed in the end for third place. Robbie Pedrick would finish fourth. Wesley Keller, the defending champion in this division, had problems on lap # 13 of the feature as he lost a wheel in his # 34 Camaro. He would continue in the race, but ran behind the leaders after repairs in the pits. The pit crews are to be commended for some fine, fast work Saturday night. In addition to Wesley's " fix", Brody Giddens, the current point leader also had to dart in for repairs. Bob Gregg, who lost a fender in an on-track skirmish also saw quick repairs to his car. " This place was starting to look like Martinsville, or Bristol," said " Captain" John Meeks, chief mechanic on Arthur Conquest's Rockoustic systems Nova after the race. Al Bouchard had his race car repaired from last week, only to get bounced around again this week. The car suffered less damage, though, and this fine and likeable driver finished fifth in the big event. The race was slowed four times for cautions, but on each of the re-starts the furious action continued and resulted in a great show.

MINI-STOCKS

Close quarters racing continued in the Mini-Stock division as Tater Stalnaker and Dave Westrich ( doing double duty in SUPER STOCK and MINI STOCK) crossed the finish line for the checkered flag in nearly a dead heat. Tater had the win by the width of a bumper after Westrich made a strong charge for the lead. Dave was behind the wheel of Larry Goolsby's # 27 Cheifland Machine Shop entry and drove the car through the entire field after starting from the rear. Mid race action for second place was WILD as Roger Damron battled with his " boss for the night" . He was driving Westrich's # 6 entry , as his Late Model Sportsman was idle for the night. They fought it out for second place, with Westrich prevailing. Roger had a good time in the mini-stocks, as the Late Model Sportsman cars were idle for the night. " I really like this place!, he said. "The guys are fun to drive with and the track is really tough and challenging." William Stalnaker had a good run and finished fourth in his Y-Not Tavern/West 326 Auto Parts entry out of Ocala.

PURE STOCKS

It was Jerome Brown's birthday Saturday night and he celebrated it in style to win going away in his Cheifland Flea Market " express". Gerry Hodge, driving the Custom Vinyl Lettering # 37 entry , had a beautiful run. He was able to catch Jerome a couple of times after the field bunched up for cautions, but each time Jerome would pull away on the re-start. This likeable driver and crew is never satisfied for second best, and you can bet they will be back to challenge Jerome again. John Hedberg finished third in the feature and David Kidd was fourth.

Be sure to be with us this weekend, when the Classic Coupes will run with the rest of the Bronson Race Series. Gates open at 5: 30. Racing is at 7:30.
