Beauchemin Tops SARA Late Model Field

by Dave Westerman

Davie, Florida driver Bobby Beauchemin kept his cool and took the measure of an impressive field to win the combined US93.1 Country/SARA Late Model 100 at New Smyrna Speedway. Beauchemin out-timed the 35-car field with a lap of 18.979, the only driver to get into the 18 second bracket.

Starting from the pole, Beauchemin quickly grabbed the lead as Jason Boyd came from third spot to run second. On lap 14, Chris Fontaine blew a tire and spun in front of the leaders but was able to keep going. Anticipating a caution, Beauchemin backed off the gas and Boyd swept around into the lead. Two laps later the caution did fly for the first time as Randy Dye spun in turn four.

Boyd continued to lead on the restart only to see caution out again on lap 20 when Tim Harrington hit the inside wall.

Rain started to fall at this point and the red flag was brought out at lap 25. Once racing resumed, Beauchemin was all over Boyd using every trick in his arsenal to get by. Fontaine blew another tire and spun in turn two on lap 41 to bring out the caution. Boyd continued to lead by Beauchemin was on his bumper and it was just a matter of time as Boyd slipped high on lap 63 giving Beauchemin all the room he needed to reclaim the lead.

Only a lap 77 caution slowed Beauchemin as he sped off to an easy victory over Boyd. Jason Crossey drove an excellent race passing Mike McCrary, Jr. for third on the last lap with Michael Williams following to get fourth and McCrary fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Tony Amico, Scott Bramlett, Michael Faulk, Edward Howell and David Logan.

It was Beauchemin's third SARA win of the season and he remains on top of the SARA point standings while Michael Williams leads the US93.1 Country point chase.

In other action, Mike Fritts passed Ricky Wood on the last lap to take the modified win in a real thriller. David Rogers was a close third followed by Wayne Parker and Wayne Southard.

Marty Pierce made a steady charge through the field to take the Mini-Stock 15-lapper ahead of Charlie Staats, Timmie Hunley, Ron Dubeau and J. D. Duncan.

Despite a smoking car, Robert Andrecheck held off Doug Samion for the Sportsman win. Rounding out the top five were Steve "Pontiac Excitement" Redditt, Ron Lufcy and Russ Antonucci.

Jim Winterstein's Oldsmobile dominated the Super Stock run as he won easily over Tim Ewing, Homer Gordon, Charlie Merz and Mike Soukup.

Brent Brown came back from an early crash to take the Strickly Stock feature over Rod Moss.

Roger Favreau driving the "ONo Sportsman" won the 1st Annual "Mattress Race" with 6 mattress', while the DEMO Derby was a tie between Chuck "Junkyard Dog" Rush and "Mo" Knauer.
