New Late Model Qualifying Record by Carlton Overshadows Limited Sportsman Headliner

(Inverness, FL; 9/23/00) Rex Struble kicked off Limited Sportsman qualifying with a 15.544 second run to pick up the Max's Tractor Service $100 fast qualifier bonus. Dale Sanders, driving for his brother Johnny, won the pole on the pill draw and set the pace for 31 laps before an overheating problem took him out of the running. Steve Anderson locked on to Sanders from the green flag and inherited the lead and the $1000 win in the Crystal Motor Car Co. 50.

John Gann, Jr. held out for a second place run but lost the $650 in tech inspection for an illegal intake that was 1/2-inch higher than allowed. Point leader Mike Veltman inherited second and moved up 10 spots on the disqualification to also win the Hard Charger Award. Rounding out the top five were Rex Struble, David Dollar and Mark Dominique. Sanders finished 17th and picked up the $100 Hard Luck Award.

Eighteen Late Models went on the clocks and Rick Carlton put the McNatt Plumbing machine into the record books with a 13.637 track record qualifying run. He picked the pole pill and when the green flew he set the pace for the entire 35 laps for his first win at Citrus County Speedway and the $1300 win purse in the ICC Late Model Big Purse Challenge. Herb Neumann, Jr. chased Carlton from flag to flag followed by Al Lawrence, Rich Pratt and Bill Becktelheimer.

Harley Wilson, Sr. took a run at Jason Waller in the final laps of the Street Stock feature to log his third win of the season. Sons, Wes and Sport, were dueling behind him for several laps when they got together in turn three and Sport lost his chance for the three in a row bonus after eating the turn three wall. Waller settled for second, Mike Bell rallied for third, John Gibbs picked up fourth, and Otis Hamilton took the fifth spot. Waller and Wes Wilson took the heat wins.

Frank Coleman closed on Kevin Harrod in the Mini-Stock point race, with his fourth win of the season Saturday night. Coleman held off the late charge of Mark Sowell and Robbie Yoakam in the run for the checkers. Point leader George Neumann logged his 18th top 5 finish to keep his comfortable lead for the crown. John Coleman picked up fifth after winning his heat. Billy Smith took the win in the first heat.

Defending Hobby Stock Champion, Roy Perkins, came off the pole, slipped back to fifth, then worked his way back to the point in the late going for his second win of the millennium. Richie Smith jockeyed back and forth with Perkins for the final five laps but had to settle for a hard fought second. James Teague worked his way up through traffic to finish third ahead of Jeff Sharp and Kreg Belcastro. Heat wins went to J.D. Goff and Jim Peters.

Allen Davis took his 34 Ford Dwarf car for the win over 20 competitors in their 20-lap main event. Tim McDaniel, Fred Brunson, Bob Hoffman and Jerry Heflin held out for the top five spots. Heat Winners were Don Hess and Fred Brunson.

Eric Sharrone made it two in a row in Street Legal Junker action followed by John Donahue and Jerry Hoover.

Saturday will see the make-up race for Figure 8's and the Women's Racing Club annual Powder Puff Race. Late Models, Limited Sportsman, Street Stock, Mini-Stock, Hobby Stocks and Street Legal Junkers will round out the night of action with only 7 weeks left in the regular season.
