Kenny Hankins Gets Orlando ini Stock Challenge

by
Dave Westerman

Round two of the Goodyear Mini-Stock Challenge proved to be quite a shootout as young Kenny Hankins took the lead late in the 50-lapper and sped to victory in his Volkswagon "Monte-Rocco". Lee Davis started the evening by setting fast time of 15.782 on the 3/8 mile track. The inversion put Davis in the fourth starting spot as Tim Clark took an early lead from his pole position. Davis charged quickly to the front and got around Clark for the lead on lap four. Clark spun on lap seven to bring out the first caution. Davis was looking strong but got trapped behind a lapped car and was shuffled back to fourth on lap 16 as Ted "Mr. Mini-Stock" Vulpius took over the point.

Davis was back on the charge but he dropped off the pace on lap 22 just before Clark spun again to bring out the caution on lap 23. Davis stalled on top of turn one and needed a push to the pits.
Vulpius continued to lead but caution was back out on lap 29 as Geoff Williams and Marty Pierce tangled in turn two. Clark had no where to go and ran into Williams' stalled car. After some quick work, all three continued.

Vulpius stayed out front but Hankins was all over him as green flag-racing continued until lap 43 when Clark got low on the track and kicked up some water in turn two causing Pierce and Randy Koon to spin with Michael Seewright plowing into Pierce's car. Only Seewright was unable to continue. Timmie Hunley also dropped out at this point.

The green flew for only two laps when Rick Sirmans stalled in turn one. On the restart, Hankins dove low and got past Vulpius in turn three leading the final four laps of the race for his sixth win of the season here.

Vulpius crossed the line in second followed by point leader Kelly Jarrett, Randy Koon and Tom Zimmerman. Mark Gonzalez, Marty Pierce, Gary Green, Tim Clark and Don Dalrymple completed the top ten.
Rusty Ebersole looked like a sure winner in the Super Late Model 25 lapper. However, Ebersole was sent pitside after track officials found his car to have and overflow from an oil catch can that was putting fluid on the speedway.

Point leader Travis Kittleson took over at that point and ran off to his sixth win of the season. Following Kittleson's Bob Steele Chevrolet Monte Carlo to the checker were Bill Pratt, David Hart, Mike Murphy and Sid Stites.

Another wild Modified 15 lapper went to veteran John Wills who slipped past Bruce Thompson on a late restart to gain the win. Thompson was second with his teammate Frank Polly finishing third for the sixth time in the last seven weeks. Point leader Jason Boyd hit the wall on the last lap and crossed the finish line fourth in a shower of sparks. Gary English was fifth.

Rich Clouser dominated the Sportsman class in his Quarno's Auto Salvage Chevy Nova outrunning Doug Samion for the win. Sam Bowman checkered third but failed post race inspection moving Larry Osteen to the show spot. Richard Hight and Jeff Wright rounded out the top five.

Super Stock point leader Carl Peters led all the way to claim his ninth win of the season. His arch-rival, Duane Freed, had to settle for second. Bob Wines drove his new car to third ahead of Chuck Fry and Rob Watford.

Kevin Reese topped the Strickly Stock field over Don Smith, Alan Prater, Tracy Jackson and Russ Rinaldi.
Daytona Antique Auto Racing Association winners were Ed Grant and Vince Capelli.
