Sport Wilson Back on Top

After five weeks of frustrating DNFs, Sport Wilson had it dialed in and flying Saturday night and put the 17-car Street Stock field to sleep in the Ironwood Homes Street Stock 40. Sport kicked off the night coming up with third fast time in qualifying just .116 seconds off Mike Bells fast time and .021 seconds off Ernie Reeds second fast time.

The whole field was inverted with fast cars to the rear and Wilson starting in 15th spot. Sport owned the outside groove and was taking two and three cars per lap, earning the point in lap 18. He checked out on the rest of the field and from there on it was a battle for second well behind the winner by a half lap.

Sport ran the last half of the race running a temperature of 240 degrees and was concerned that DNF #6 may be in the offing. Fortunately his #94 racer held out and without a doubt, he earned this one the hard way. Sport earned the hard charger award and took home $625 for the win and bonuses. Otis Hamilton held off the charge for second from John Gibbs, Mike Bell, Wes Wilson and Don Teague.
Gibbs was found illegal in tech inspection and losses all points for the night and his $250 payoff.

Dan Johnson logged his 4th Late Model feature win in a knock down drag out battle with Herb Neumann in the final 10 laps of their 30 lap main. Both drivers took on the start from the rear challenge and Johnson picked up an additional $750 for a $1,765 dollar night after Neumann got sent to the rear when they got together in turn one with just one lap left.

Mike Bresnahan had to borrow a ride from Bruce Smith for the feature and managed a second place finish after winning his heat maintaining his 117-point lead over Johnson in the point race. Al Lawrence, Perry Lovelady and Brad Atkins took the balance of the top five spots.

After taking several weeks off in the Limited Sportsman action, Bill Oestreicher came back to Citrus three weeks ago and has been a man on a mission. For the past three weeks he has been the man to beat. Oestreicher picked up the $200 three in a row bonus for his third win of the season, holding off Rex Struble, John Gann, Travis Nichols and Mike Veltman in the run for the flag. Nichols and Veltman took the heat wins. They are preparing for the M. Dominique Mobile Home Restoration 40 that will be paying $2,000 to win on September 16th.

J.D Goff made it two in a row and will going for the Hobby Stock three in a row bonus next week. He out ran the 16-car field in their 20 lap main event. Mike Ruff locked on to second after a seesaw battle for the spot over Richie Smith, Brandon Johnson and Larry Schreckengost. Goff and Kreg Belcastro won the heats. John Coleman took his second Mini Stock win of the season, out maneuvering Mark Sowell who was running for Kevin Harrod for points. Mark worked on Coleman for all 20 laps but just couldnt make the pass. Frank Coleman, George Neumann and Don Faunce rounded out the nose to tail finish for the top five. Jimmy Wear and John Coleman picked up the heat wins.

Robbie Hage took a wire-to-wire win in the Figure 8 20-lap event for his second of the year. The St. Petersburg gang is liking Citrus. Charlie Meyer made a late run at Robbie but just didnt have enough, settling for second followed by Bob Hage and Tim Henauct, who was looking for his three in a row bonus. Travis Nichols picked up fifth in his second outing in Figure 8s.

Eric Sharrone and Nick Fiorentino Jr. ran one and two in the Street Legal Junker 15 lap main event only to lose the spots in tech inspection. Jerry Hoover inherited the win and Mike Johnson picked up the Carter Auto Recycling bonus for his third place finish. Bull Dogs #301 was the last car running in the Demolition Derby picking up the $600 win purse over a 14-car field.

Mike Veltman battled with Bull Dog for the final 5 minutes of the crashing and banging but finally had to give it up settling for the $200 second place money. Ed Ribblett held out for third and a $100 payoff. Next Demo Derby will be Oct. 14th. Mini Cup cars, the Late Model Consolidated Freightways Big Purse Challenge for $1,300 to win plus a full race card highlight next Saturdays program.
