Rusty Wins From the Pole at Charlotte

(Punta Gorda, FL) The fourth leg of the Circle One Limited Late Model 6-Pack took place at Charlotte County Speedway on August 26 after a two hour rain delay. Before the showers came, Rusty Hillman (North Fort Myers) took fast time in qualifying and also pulled the pill for the pole position. Slim Jim All Pro driver Billy Bigley, Jr. (Naples) started along side Hillman but went backwards early in the race. Hillman dominated and Smokin' Joe Sumasky (Lehigh Acres) battled with Points Leader Brad Barkis (Fort Myers) for second. Barkis finally got around Sumasky on lap 35, but a spin by Travis "The Real" McCoy (Fort Lauderdale) brought out the caution flag and the field reverted back to the last completed lap, which meant Sumasky was moved back up into second position.

Again, Hillman built up a considerable lead, leaving a freight train led by Sumasky, Barkis, Greg Kaouk, Doug Moff (Fort Myers) and Bigley.

Time and time again, Barkis made attempts to pass Sumasky, finally succeeding on lap 62. John "Taz" Garrett's (North Fort Myers) engine problems, brought out the caution flag, bunching the field back up on the restart, ending Hillman's dominance as Barkis continually knocked on his back door and Sumasky ran a distant third. Hillman emerged victorious and Barkis settled for second. Sumasky, Moff and Kaouk rounded out the top five. Johnny "Action" Jackson (Ellenton) took home the Hard Charger Award.

The FASTRUCKS qualified with Curt Haywood (Ft. Lauderdale) being the fastest qualifier and Jimmy Gill and Randy Sober (Punta Gorda) starting on the front row. While Gill built a commanding lead from the start, Points Leader Todd Bontrager (Sarasota) went steadily backwards, finally being lapped by Gill and eventually suffering a flat tire. Gill took the win, followed by Charlie Worth (Loxahatchee) and Paul Grynewicz (Hudson).

Fellow Lehigh Acres drivers Buzz Martin and Kenny Eaton had bad luck in the beginning of the Marlow-Werner Sportsman feature race as they both made trips to the pits, ending Martin's evening before it began, while Eaton was able to continue one lap down to the rest of the field. Darrell Suggs took an early lead with fellow Arcadians Raymond "Super Frog" Jones and Points Leader James Dubose forming a three-car freight train. Jones attempted to pass Suggs on the outside with Dubose making a "DeSoto Sandwich" as they went three-wide more than once.

Jones and Dubose both finally passed Suggs and the racing buddies treated the fans to "on their feet" excitement as they raced each
other for the lead with Dubose pulling alongside Jones more than once. Jones went on to take the win with Dubose in second. A late charge by Jerry Bryant (Punta Gorda) caused a photo finish between him and Suggs but Suggs beat him by a by bumper for third place.

The field of 28 cars in Lee's Auto Repair Road Warriors got off to a bad start with four wrecks before a lap could be completed on four restarts. The division was finally sent into the pits to cool off and were unable to complete their race due to the 11:30 p.m. curfew.

Frank Welch (North Fort Myers) took an early lead in the Big Wheels Mini-Stocks in his custom mini-station wagon/truck he affectionately calls "The Grim Reaper" but Doug Wilson (Cape Coral) gave him a run for his money. Welch took the win, with Wilson and Brian Richardson (North Fort Myers) finishing second and third.

The Cowboy Cadillacs ran a curfew shortened race with Cheryl "The Pearl" Weaver (Port Charlotte) taking over the points lead by herself after Don Vanacke's (Punta Gorda) early retirement from the race. Robert St. John (Arcadia) took the win, however, leaving Weaver second and Raymond Tucker (North Fort Myers) third.

On September 1, the Open-Wheel Modifieds, Sportsman, Pure Stock, Road
Warriors, Cowboy Cadillacs, and Legends cars will be racing. The third leg of the Budweiser Open-Wheel Modified 6-Pack Series takes place on September 9 and the Tampa Bay Area Racing Association Sprint Cars return on September 16.

Charlotte County Speedway is located at 8655 Piper Road, I-75 exit 28, and follow the Charlotte County. Airport signs. Gates open at 4 p.m. and qualifying begins at 6 p.m. For more information, call 575-2422.
