Veteran Racer Tommy Johnson Nabs First Win of the Season

(August 19, 2000) After the Sunbelt race Friday, the Super Late Models had the night off.

It was a big weekend for Past Champ Mike Williams as he finished 2nd to Dick Anderson on Friday in SunBelt Super Late Model Series, and came back to win in Bobby Sears #9 Ace Hardware car Saturday night in the Late Model feature. Randy Dyes #43 Country 93.1/Speedway Dodge Avenger came away with the runner-up spot ahead of rookie challenger Chad Pierce in the #57 Biscuits and Gravy/ASM Chevy. Chad Allman was fourth over Phil Bessettes #17 Pontiac.

Robert Ham took advantage of Jerry Symons running out of fuel to get the hard fought win in the SARA race. Check out all the details and finishing order at the SARA site: www.sararacing.com

Veteran Ted Vulpius in the Greener Side Up Pinto added to his long list of wins in the Mini-Stock feature as he managed to finish ahead of rookie Marty Pierce in the #75 BBM Mustang. Rookie (14 yr old) Eric Powell got a career best 3rd, Charlie Statts and Ron Dubeau rounded out the top 5.

Sportsman Bob Anderchecks #90 KOA/Marines Camaro looked like the eventual winner, but a bad fuel cell cap cost him the black flag and the race. This let veteran racer Tommy Johnson roar his way to his first win of the 2000 season in the Edelman Air/B&K Auto Monte Carlo. Bill Fuller ran strong in the #43 to take second over Heat winner Steve Reddit in the #1 Pontiac. Randy Newby was back in a pretty #54 Daytona Beach Hilton Monte Carlo, and finished fourth. David Meyers was 5th at the stripe.

The Super Stock feature again had a big field and was the crowd favorite. Daytona's Charlie Merz experienced motor trouble last week, but the current point leader was back in fine form to get the dominating win over arch rival Jim Winterstein in the #13 Oldsmobile! Mike Soucup is steadily getting stronger in the #45, and ran a strong 3rd ahead of Ted Helms #61 Buick and "The Ladies Man, King of the Doll House", Homer Gordons #22.

Strictly Stock had a first time winner, Brett Brown got the win over Richard Boulton, Kerry "2 barrel" Payne, Curt Smith, and Rod Moss.

The big Mattress Race is coming up September 9th...look for more information!
