Seven Feature Races In Citrus County Speedway Books

(Inverness, Fl. Aug. 29,2000) Twin Sportsman feature races plus a full race card and bicycle races gave race fans plenty of excitement at Citrus County Speedway Saturday night. After a complete rainout last week, drivers and fans were ready for the big night action.

Mike Veltman took little time moving from his sixth starting spot in the makeup Limited Sportsman race to his second win in a row over a 17 car starting field. John Gann continued to be his biggest competitor running a tight second followed by Johnny Sanders, Allen Struble and Jim Smith. The inverted lineup in the second race put Veltman to the rear of the field in his attempt to go for the three in a row bonus. Pole sitter Bill Oestreicher had other plans though and he was able to hold off George Neumann and Veltman for his first win of the season. This was the third time Veltman has gone for the three in a row bonus and did pull it off on his first attempt in the early part of the season.

Late Models saw fourteen cars take the green and, former champ, Herb Hoefler took his first checkered flag in 2000. Defending champion, Dan Johnson and Tate Pierce chased right to the flag. Herb Neumann Jr. started at the back of the field wanting a piece of the start from behind bonus but couldnt pull it off, settling for fourth and the Womens Racing Club Hard Charger Award. Mike Bresnahan fell off the pace in lap 20 but was able to salvage fifth and a heat win. Tim Sharrone picked up the win in the second heat.

In a savagely fought battle to come through traffic, 22 Street Stocks provided the fans with plenty of excitement for their 20 lap main event. Point leader Wes Wilson started 5th and moved to the point early, avoiding the mayhem that was going on behind him. He went on to win his 7th of the year with Victor Stanley, Wayne Lewis, Danny Cretty and Mike Bell in hot pursuit. Scott Hendrickson and Harley Wilson Sr. were disqualified for an altercation they had after getting together causing a caution flag. Lewis, Sport Wilson and Stanley picked up the heat wins.

Frank Coleman scored his third Mini Stock win of the season with a 17-car field chasing him all the way. George Neumann spent the entire race trying to move around Coleman but had to settle for second ahead of a very aggressive Billy Smith. John Coleman picked up fourth ahead of Kevin Harrod. Harrod also picked up the win in the first heat while Mark Sowell won the second but was unable to finish in the feature.

Mike Ruff had his way with the Hobby Stock, twenty-two car field. The young teenager picked up his third win of the season with J.D. Goff right on his rear bumper at the finish line. James Teague outran point leader Chris Hooker in the race for 3rd. Roy Perkins salvaged a fifth place finish. Jim Hand, Richie Smith and Chris Hooker all came up winners in their heat races.

Tim Henaucht headed up a Pinellas County Figure 8 foursome that finished in the top four spots in their 20 lap main event. Robbie Hage, Charlie Meyer and Bob Hage went nose to tail for the entire 20 laps. Point leader Robbie Aaron locked on to fifth after starting from the rear of the ten car-starting field.

Sixteen cars took the green in the Street Legal Junker division and Steve Burdette led the race for 14 laps before Tim Hundley got under him in the final lap and went on to take the win. Shawn Kipp outran Eric Sharrone in the race for second.

Saturday night will see the make up for the J.D. Smith Termite and Pest Control Mini Stock 40 lap special plus the 911 Emergency Racers and a wild and crazy Bag Race. Also on the card are the Late Models, Limited Sportsman, Street Stocks, Hobby Stocks and Street Legal Junkers.
