Highs and Lows at the Lake City Speedway This Weekend

Lake City, FL - The highs came with 20 Limited Late Models (formerly Hobby Stock) and 18 Street Stocks putting on a great show. The low came when a young spectator was hit by a tire, but, we have found out that he is OK.

The Limited Late Model class put on a strong show with lots of cars. After the three heat races with every one fighting for position to be in the feature, 14 cars made it to the feature.

The #30 car of Marty Kelly was in third place for most of the race until his axle broke and a wheel came off his car. The wheel hit Flagman Robbie Disbrow and went over the fence. After clearing the fence the tire struck a young boy and a van before landing back on the track. Minor bumps and bruises for all involved, and the young boy was taken to the local hospital, where he was treated and released. Our hopes and prayers go out to all involved.

The race was continued and Randy Merwin (#38) and Team Orange Crush held off a full race charge from Tommy Merrill, Jr. (#35). The #76 car of Rickey Fassell held off challenges from Chad Grogan and Terry Jones for third.

The Florida Modified race saw a group of mostly newcomers from the Jacksonville area filling out the field. Jacksonville's Gene Tatum (#41) held off a continuous challenge from Doodle Pipkin (#51) for the win. At the same time as he challenged for the lead, Doodle was fighting challenges from Eddie Holton (#14) and Robert Balkin (#2) to maintain third place.

The Late Model Sportsmen came down fresh from a week off to play at the Series Race. Lake City's own Everette Phillips (#46) came from the tail to win for his second race in a row. E.J. Wise (#98), Gary Palmer (#37), and Raymond Larson (#18) battled hard and finished in that order.

In the Street Stock division, Interlachen's Hollywood Chip Owen (#1) held off a strong challenge from Wayno Risner (#38) to finish one and two. Dean Sands (#44) of Lake City battled from the back of the 15-car pack to finish third, barely squeaking by neighbor Lee Brinkley in the #37 car.

Last week's war of attrition took its toll on the Pure Stock Class with several racers needing an extra week to come back. The #97 car of Joey Rolling held off a constant challenge from Floyd Martin, Jr.'s (#1jr) for Joey's first win. David Dowling (#22) passed 12-year old, Cody Bryant (#4) to finish third and fourth, respectively.

The Blood Mobile will be at the Lake City Speedway next week and anyone donating a pint of blood can get in the Grandstand for free. So, please come out to donate some blood and see some great local racing.

[Editor's Note: Please note at time of this release, the young boy's name was withheld at the request of his parents.]
