Shelton Dominates Late Model Sportsman at Hialeah

(Hialeah, FL; 7/23/2000) Veteran Bobby Shelton cast off weeks of foul fortune to score a dominant win in the 25-lap Late Model Sportsman feature event Saturday night at Hialeah Speedway.

Wheeling his bright red Camaro from the front row, Shelton got the jump on the initial green flag and was gone, quickly lapping back markers in the 14-car field. Joe Winchell broke out of traffic at the mid-race mark but never had a shot at Shelton and finished second. Danny Maddox, Gary McGoron, and Steve Holt rounded out the top five finishers in the caution free event.

Steve Godlewski proved to be the best of the Street Stock runners as he nabbed his third win of the season in the 25-lap main event. Jake Reedy put plenty of pressure on Godlewski but could not muster a pass and settled for runner-up honors over Mike Orth, Bubba Martone, and John Covington.

Mini-Stock action saw David Russell survive not one but two spins to continue his dominance of the small car set. Yellow flags flew with regularity, 10 in all, as Russell notched his ninth win this season, the most of any driver at the speedway. Jim Miner, Tim Jones, Eric Rogers, and Kenny Strong followed Russell to the stripe in the 20 lap event.

Mike Blinco dominated the 25-lap Cyclone headliner as he led wire-to-wire for his first victory this season. Bruce Moerlins, C.J. Haycraft, Rick Lenhardt, and Mike Powers trailed at the checkers.

The special 25-lap Pure Stock feature went to Jeff Roberts over Robert Crum and Tony Crowder while Roger Pfau bested the Figure-8 runners ahead of Roberts and J.R. Fitch.
