Charlotte County Beats Mother Nature

Sands, Bean Win Outlaw Modified "Danny Curl, Jr. Memorial" Twin-25's
(Punta Gorda, FL; 7/16/2000) The Outlaw Modifieds like to call Charlotte County Speedway "home" even though most of the drivers are from Southeastern Florida and only race at CCS on a monthly basis. On July 15, they held their annual Danny Curl, Jr. Memorial Twin-25's.

Twenty cars took the green flag in the first 25-lapper with Heidi Locke (Tavernier) and Dan Curl, Sr. (Florida City) sitting on the front row. Point leader and current Champion, Randy Sands (Tavernier), started sixth in his "Pink Bath Tub" but took the lead on lap 6 with Carlos Puig hot on his tail in second, both of them lapping cars by lap 11. Sands took the win, followed by Lance Hoversen (Key West) and Robbie Bean (Miami).

The field was inverted for the second 25-lapper with Shawn Namar (Ft. Lauderdale) and Phil Brigham (Stuart) sitting on the front row. Donna Flowers (Miami) took an early lead, but Bean passed her on lap 7 for the lead, taking Lance Hoversen and Puig with him while Sands sat in fourth position. The caution flag flew for the first time on lap 20, giving the field a chance to bunch up on the restart. The four-car freight train ended the same way they were running with Bean taking the Victory Lap and the first place trophy.

With a full moon rising in the east, the Oldies 95 Open-Wheel Modifieds took to the track for their 25-lap feature and a four-car wreck took place before a lap could be completed, causing two cars to make an early retirement to the pits.

On the second restart, another multiple car collision happened but all cars were able to continue. A third restart ensued for debris on the race track, but finally Dennis Webb (Largo) led the way until calamity again befell the field due to a lapped car, causing Scott Adema (Fort Myers) and Kevin Williams (Port Charlotte) to exit the race early. Tommy Schnader (Largo) took the lead on lap 10 but 1999 Champion, Chris "Big Fish" Turner (Naples), took the lead from Schnader on lap 16. Turner took the win, followed by Schnader and Ronnie Barnett (Port Charlotte). Adema and Oblinger (North Fort Myers) took home heat wins.

Kevin Utter (Fort Myers) led the way in his fast Ford Thunderbird in the Q Country Pure Stocks, building a large lead and dominating, while Joe Reese (Bonita Springs), Mark Ludvigsen (Fort Myers Beach), and "Outta My Way" Kay Jackson (Port Charlotte) battled for position.

Meanwhile, Mid-Season Points Champion Chuck Sweet (Port Charlotte) was making his way through the field despite having no power steering and was battling with Billy Vandevender (Cape Coral) for position. Utter took an impressive win, but the fans were all on their feet for the last lap as the other five battled for second with Reese, Jackson, Ludvigsen and Sweet rounding out the top five. Utter also took home a heat win making a sweep for the evening and his best ever night of racing at CCS. Ludvigsen took the second heat win.

Scott Barnes (Ft. Myers) led the way in the Road Warrior feature race. The Thundering Herd were able to complete five laps before the caution flag flew for the first time. Del Beckner (Naples) ran second behind Barnes, waiting for the opportunity to pass, which came on lap 12.

Full Moon Fever hit "Tipover" Terry Price (Punta Gorda) after he was blackflagged for loose body parts after he made his way up to third position, but he was able to return to the race at the back of the pack. Barnes suffered a flat tire which moved Joe Bossey (Englewood) up to second and Conrad Molter (Naples) to third after starting near the back of the pack. Beckner took the win with Bossey and Molter finishing second and third. Wayne Wilson (Ft. Myers) and Ron Dushek, Sr.(Lehigh Acres) were both disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct. Billy Lentz (Fort Myers Beach) and Denny Ray (Naples) took home first place trophies in their heat races.

Hugh Alexander (Punta Gorda) and Don Vanacker (Punta Gorda) battled in the Cowboy Cadillacs with Vanacker taking the lead on lap 7. A frightening moment occurred when Justin Bryant (Arcadia) flipped his truck between turns 3 and 4, but he was able to drive it to the pits. Vanacker took the win, followed by Wally Smith (Naples) and Mid-Season Champion Cheryl "The Pearl" Weaver (Port Charlotte). Robert St. John (Arcadia) and Vanacker (Punta Gorda) were the heat winners.

The third leg of the Circle One Limited Late Model 6-Pack Series will take place on July 22. Also, on the schedule are Sportsman, Pure Stock, Mini-Stock and Road Warrior divisions, as well as the visiting Legends class.

Charlotte County Speedway is located at 8655 Piper Road, I-75 exit 28, and follow the Charlotte County. Airport signs. Gates open at 4 p.m. and qualifying begins at 6 p.m. For more information, call 575-2442.
