Browning Returns Home...and to Victory Lane

(Jacksonville, FL; 6/21/2000) Racing action at Jax Raceway's NASCAR sanctioned 1/2 mile "D" shaped oval saw some familiar faces in the winner's circle last weekend, as the track played host to five divisions of racing action.

David Browning made a believer out of the saying "you can always come home." Browning, a Late Model multi-time champion who has been competing at other race tracks this season with little success, came back to Jax Saturday night for just the second time this season and showed once again that he hasn't forgotten how to get around it.

Browning and David Crews won their respected heat events, placing them on the front row for the 30-lap main event. Browning got the jump at the start of the race, and never looked back leading all 30 laps. Crews held down the second spot for one lap when Steve Whitener made his way to the runner up spot, to follow Browning to the checkered flag. Crews settled for third with fourth and fifth being made up of Terry Pless and points' leader Michael Murrer.

The 20-lap Grand American Modified division was a race between brothers. Kenny Bayless took the lead at the drop of the green flag and led until lap 5 when he spun out, bringing out the caution flag. His brother, Kevin, took the point from there and held off Eddie Holton and Gene Tatum for the win.

Windal Clark took the front spot in the Pure Stock feature but could only hold on for one lap when John Ward took the lead. Ward would lead until a flat tire would send him to the pits, putting Chris Combs out front where he would stay. Former champion, John Taylor followed in second with Ron Doan in third.

Bobby Padgett made it two in a row in the Sportsmen 20-lap feature event. Padgett qualified on the pole, and would never relinquish the front spot. Gary Godwin followed in second for three laps, when Chad Grogan passed him, and set his sight on the leader. Grogan's night would end early as he pitted six laps later. Randy Clark moved up to second from there to bring home the runner-up spot at the line, with Marty Kelly in third.
