Crisp Wins Auto Traders Championship Feature at Sunshine

Ed Kidd in the 6 car won fast time for the Street Stock feature with 41-Mike Kowalke getting second and 4-Jason Graham taking third. Late Models did time trials also; the 22 of Sam Coghill won fast time with 73-Billy Mowery in second, and 1-Wayne Jefferson coming in third.

The Street Stock had 40 cars show up, so there were B-Main and C-Main races. The C-Main saw the 13 of Mike Leacock take the win with a last lap pass on Kevin Willis in the 81 car, slamming him in the driver's side to get the position. Six cars advanced to the B-Main with 13-Mike Leacock, 81-Kevin Willis, 06-Brad Fisk, 09-Paul Godby, 94-Scott Holly and 96-Kirby Kitzman.
Only eight cars could advance to the feature from the B-Main. One of them would be a promoter's choice. The 56 of John Makula won with 02-Richard Crisp, 20-Steve Olone, 98-Roger Welch, 13-Mike Leacock, 65-Bob Patterson, 00-Pat Grimes, and the promoter's choice was 99-Steve Harbuck. This set the rest of the field for the feature.

Mini Stocks had two heats this weekend. First heat saw the 55 of Tom Zimmerman take the win with 69-Jay Zolciak in second and 15-Doug Hopper in third. In the second heat, Tina Reiner in the 14 car took the win with teammate 41- Mark Moniz in second and 65-Joey Catarelli in third.

Open Wheel also had two heats for the evening. The first heat was won by 33-Chico Alberto with 56-Allyn Summers in second and 2-J.R. Wade in third. The second heat was won by 51-Mike Hinegardner with 88-Chris Robbins in second and 1-Wayne Jefferson in third.

One Stop Mini Stocks Feature
One Stop Mini Stocks ran their 20 lap feature with a 24 car field. Chris Thornton in the 24 car started on the pole with 15-Doug Hopper on the outside. The race began and before the completion of the first lap the 70 of Marty Neikens found himself leading the race. The 81 of Steve Pelo followed in second.
With about eight laps into the race, Neikens was enjoying a lengthy lead when the 98 of Scott Riefner and 14-Tina Reiner got together bringing out the first caution. All the distance that Neikens had disappeared. On the restart, Neikens had to contend with the 81 of Steve Pelo. The battle went on until the 5 of Rick Taylor parked his car in turn four on lap 17. The field was tightened once again with Neikens in front and Pelo knocking on the door.
The battle was going to be decided with three laps to go. Pelo tried to get the lead but Marty Neikens in the 70 car held off Pelo to take his second win in two weeks. Steve Pelo in the 81 car took a solid second with 30- Tim McPhail in third, 65-Joey Catarelli in fourth and 69-Jay Zolciak finishing in fifth.

Auto Trader Street Stocks 50 Lap Feature
The Auto Trader Street Stocks came out for their 50 lap feature The 40 of Ron Davis started on the pole with 9-Dan Partelo on the outside. The race started with alot of side by side racing. The 41 of Mike Kowalke was sent sailing into the infield on the completion of the first lap. Kowalke kept control but lost alot of positions before getting back onto the track.
The 21 of Ricky Hoffman brought out the first caution for a spin. The was still no clear leader at that time. Davis and Partelo were still fighting over the top spot. After the restart, Davis and Partelo started the battle all over again, but 2-Robert Crisp had other ideas. Crisp waited for the right time and made a pass to get the lead from both Davis and Partelo. Crisp got to the front and checked out on the field while Davis and Partelo were still battling.
Crisp was leading by a large margin when the second and final caution came out for the 41 of Mike Kowalke. The 13 of Mike Leacock drove into turn one too hard and nailed Kowalke in the door, sending him to the wall. Kowalke bounced off the wall and back into traffic where the 98 of Roger Welch hit Kowalke.
Leacock had done the same thing to other cars and he voluntarily took his car to the pits after the contact with Kowalke.
Crisp was still leading at this point, but the second and third spot had changed. The 4 of Jason Graham and fast time winner, 6-Ed Kidd were battling for second.
Robert Crisp took his third 50 lap Championship race in a row. Crisp won in 1998, 1999, and now 2000. Jason Graham in the 4 car took home second with 6-Ed Kidd in third, 40-Ron Davis in fourth and 9-Dan Partelo in Fifth. All of the drivers did a great job; clean racing is always the best!

Open Wheel Modifieds Feature
Open Wheel Modifieds were interesting once again. The race started out with 51-Mike Hinegardner on the pole and J.R. Wade on the outside. At the drop of the green, Hinegardner took off while Wade was caught sleeping.
On the completion of the first lap, the 56 of Allyn Summers and the 2 of Wade got together on the front stretch. Both cars lost control and were sent flying into the turn one wall. Summers backed into the wall as Wade took flight into the fence; after rolling into the fence, his car rested on the wall. Both drivers got out under their own power but they were out of the race.
Hinegardner held the lead for the next nine laps, but the 1 of Wayne Jefferson was on his way. Jefferson took the lead on lap nine, passing Hinegardner coming out of turn four. Once Jefferson took the lead he never relinquished it, bringing home his second straight win.

The 8 of Randy Rhodes took second, with 6-Chet Senokossoff in third, 51-Hinegardner in fourth and 0-Jay Steele rounding out the top five.

Late Models Feature
The Late Models had a better turn out of cars this week, so they ran a 30 lap feature. The 82 of Den Neighbor, Jr. was on the pole with the 18 of Andy Werden on the outside. At the start, Neighbor took the lead as Werden and the 56 of Wendell Overstreet battled over second, running side by side. The battle was over when they got together coming out of turn two, both cars hitting the wall and causing a chain reaction. The 2 of Wayne Bowman hit the 56 and the 22 of Sammy Coghill hit the 2. All the cars continued but Overstreet and Werden ended up going to the pits, while Bowman and Coghill both sustained some front-end damage.
On lap six, the 69 of Johnny Stanford spun the leader, Den Neighbor, Jr. in the 82 car. Stanford was sent to the rear and Neighbor kept the lead. The lead was short lived with Wayne Jefferson in the 1 car leading after the seventh lap. A couple of laps after the restart, the 0 of Mason Love and 00-Brian Leverock, driving Robert Yoho's car because his car broke, got into a shoving match for two laps. The shoving match was over when Leverock spun into the grass, going a lap down.

Wayne Jefferson took the 1 Late Model to his second feature win of the night. The 2 of Wayne Bowman brought his damaged car to second with 82-Den Neighbor, Jr. in third, 73-Billy Mowery taking fourth and 22-Sammy Coghill coming home fifth.

Q Auto&Injury Figure-8 Feature
The Q Auto&Injury Figure-8 ran thirteen cars this week, with the 17 of Bobby Moctezuma on the pole and 13-James Leacock on the outside. The race was clean until the 89 of Ron Davis pushed the 04 of Ron Veller into the grass, causing the grasshopper to run the grass until he got back on the track; Veller lost many positions.
The intersection did not see much action until lap 12 when the leader, 15-Joey Catarelli started getting close to Veller. Then, Veller started cutting between the 14 of Wayne Calkins and the 89 of Ron Davis for a couple of laps.
When that settled down, the 31 of Donnie Thomas and 17 Moctezuma did the criss-cross on the last lap getting real close. Joey Catarelli in the 15 car won his second in a row with 14-Wayne Calkins in second, 89-Ron Davis in third, 31-Donnie Thomas in fourth and 11-Art Calkins in fifth.

Enduros Feature
The Enduros ran their figure 8 this week with only eight cars in the race. The 15x of Don Ibbitson hit the 32 of Darryl Hage in the intersection. There was alot of dust, neither one looked liked they saw the other until it was too late. The 88 of Eddie Allen won, with 37-David Gillispie in second and 02-Pete Cracolici in third, 24-Dave Cleary in fourth and 47-Rick Botts in fifth. I really would like to see more Enduros in the figure 8. These guys put on a good show.
