Dan Johnson Wins Nick Nicholas Ford L.M Challenge at Citrus Co. Speedway

(Inverness, Fl. 6/10/00) Defending Late Model Champion Danny Johnson made it back to Victory Lane after a 16 race dry spell that dates back to the fall of 1999. It took four attempts to get the 30-lap race underway due to three 1st lap mishaps on turn one and two. The third one ended Forrest Goffs night, with major damage to his racer after a run in with the turn one wall. Two more caution flags shortened the race to 25 laps and when the checkers flew, Danny Johnson was back in the winners column claiming the Nick Nicholas Ford Big Purse Challenge for the $1,300 win purse. Scotty Crockett chased Johnson right to the line for a solid second out running Tate Pierce and Mike Bresnahan to the start finish line. John Lovelady was out to make it three in a row but had to settle for a fifth place finish leaving that $1,000 bonus in tact. Tate Pierce and Robert Elting took the heat wins. Brad Atkins put his racer on its top in the first heat after running into the water barrels on turn two. He walked away from the accident but his racecar was pretty well damaged ending his night early.
Mike Veltman made it two in a row in the Limited Sportsman 20 lap feature. John Gann, Johnny Sanders, David Dollar and Jimmy Wilson ran nose to tail for the final five laps to finish in that order. Lenny Brown won the firs heat but was unable to start the feature. John Luke took win in the second heat for his first of the season. Sport Wilson dominated the first 12 laps of the Street Stock feature and looked like he would make it two in a row until his car started smoking badly. He took a black flag which took him out of the race opening the door for defending champion Victor Stanley to take his first win of the season. Michael Bell, Wayne Lewis Don Teague and Otis Hamilton took the balance of the top five spots. Heat Winners were John LeVecque, Wayne Lewis and Don Teague. LeVecque took a wild ride on the turn four wall in the feature that just about put him on his top.
Kevin Harrod scored his second Mini Stock win of the season denying Rick Coleman his three-peat bonus. Coleman started 7th but had to settle for a hard fought second place run. George Neumann finished third over pole sitter Billy Smith and Don Faunce. Smith and Harrod took the heat wins.
Mike Ruff started 10th and sliced and diced his way through three deep traffic, to take his first Hobby Stock win of the season. Two more of the teenage young guns chased him to the flag in the way of Richie Smith and Kreg Belcastro who finished second and third respectively. Roy Perkins salvaged a fourth place finish ahead of Jim Peters. Heat winners were J.D. Goff, Richie Smith and Roy Perkins.
Eight Street Legal Junkers took the green flag in their 15-lap ride in their new racecourse and Shawn Kipp took the top spot over Spanky Burdett and last weeks winner Dave Davis.
Underdog, Papa Dave Stocker took his 1980 Mazda Rotary Engine machine to the win over Tom Holmes 91 Corvette in the two-lap final run in the Fan Participation race. Late Models return for the Southern Pro Engine and Machine Big Purse Challenge on Saturday. The former Top Cop racers are now known as the 911 Emergency racers and will make their first of three appearances at Citrus County Speedway this weekend. Figure 8s are also back in action along with the Limited Sportsman, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Hobby Stocks, Street Legal Junkers and Fan Participation Races. It should be a fun filled race night!
