SARA Trucks Invade Charlotte County

The newly formed Southern Auto Racing Association (SARA) Pro Trucks hit the asphalt at Charlotte County Speedway on June 10. Butch Yoakam (New Port Richey) had the fastest qualifying time but Bruce Gaskins (Dunnellon) started in the pole position, leading the race from the first lap. David Hartin (Lakeland) blew his motor on lap 18 bringing out the only caution flag for the 50-lap event. David Froelich, Jr. (Loxahatchee) took the lead on lap 31 and although Gaskins made several valiant efforts to retake the lead, Froelich took the checkered flag first. Gaskins finished second and Yoakam was third.
The Cowboy Cadillacs feature started off with a bang as Justin Bryant (Arcadia) and David Walter (Bonita Springs) came together after contact with Robert St. John (Arcadia) and Joey Gilbert (Fort Myers). Bryant went airborne over the truck bed of Walter and knocked down a portion of the backstretch wall. Cheryl "The Pearl" Weaver (Port Charlotte) took an early lead Points Leader Don Vanacker (Punta Gorda) was on her tail by the midway point of the race and took the lead on Lap 12, going on to take his fourth straight win. Weaver and Buck Wilson (Arcadia) rounded out the Top 3. Before the havoc began, St. John did manage a heat win, as did Weaver..
The Super Mini Cups held their 50- lap national North vs. South race. Tom Clark (Brandon) started 7th but was up to second place by the first lap and took the lead from Doug Smith (Valrico) on the third lap. Buddy Brown (Sarasota) hit the wall hard coming out of Turn 4 on Lap 13 but emerged from his miniaturized race vehicle on his own volition. Josh Guy (Auburndale) took the lead for several laps but Clark was able to regain it but Guy again jumped to the front for good, taking the win with Doug Smith (Valrico) and Clark finishing second and third. Guy also took a heat wines did Dan Catton (Punta Gorda).
Doug Moff (Fort Myers) started in the pole position for the 50-lap Cat Country Limited Late Models race but soon had Richie Anderson (North Fort Myers) breathing down his tail pipe, trying to take the lead with a loose handling race car. John Taz" Garrett (North Fort Myers) was disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct after deliberately hitting the car of Leo Powley (North Fort Myers) after the caution flag was thrown for a racing altercation involving both cars, who had been trading paint for much of the heat and feature races. Moff dominated the race taking the win with Anderson and Hillman following behind. Anderson and Hillman made two young fans happy because they donated their trophies and took pictures with the youngsters. Moff also took home a heat win, as did Birthday Boy Jeff Dufresne (Fort Myers).
Bob Williams (Naples) took the win in both the heat and feature in the Road Warriors division. Conrad Molter (Naples) finished second and Point Leader Denny Ray (Naples) was third. Chuck Stevens (Fort Myers) also won a heat races.
Ronnie Allen (Lehigh Acres) and Kevin Utter (Fort Myers) ended up on top of one another after a racing altercation with Joe Reese (Bonita Springs) in the Q Country Pure Stocks. Although they provided a few scary moments for the fans in the stands, both were uninjured although both cars suffered extensive damage. When it was all said and done, Points Leader Chuck Sweet (Port Charlottee) showed his division why he was in the points lead as he snuck around Greg "Spiderman" Anderson (Port Charlotte) who had dominated the race. "Outta My Way" Kay Anderson (Punta Gorda) also snuck around Anderson to finish second. Allen and "Gentleman" Jim Keating (Bonita Springs) left the track with first place heat trophies.
