The "KING" Rules At DeSoto

The King of the Short Track, Dick Anderson of Wildwood, continued his dominance of the DeSoto Speedway Pro Late Model series last Saturday night. Anderson who has won three races in the 10 race series collected his latest win by edging out Lee Collins of Felda and his high-flying son Wayne Anderson to win the 125 lap feature event.

"The beat goes on," Anderson said. "I was off a little tonight but it wasn't as bad as it looked. For some reason it would take me four or five laps to get going and they could hang with me. But once I got going I could pull away from them."

Anderson set fast time for the race with a 15.52 (87 mph) lap time but with the draw for a top ten starting spot he claimed fourth place with Jimmy Cope of Pinellas Park on the Pole, Shane Sawyer second and Bryan Mansfield of Sarasota holding third place. By lap 21 Anderson had taken the lead and began his run for the checkered flag.

On lap 110 Anderson held the lead, son Wayne second and Ricky Carlton of Homosassa third with Collins in fourth place. Carlton and Wendell Overstreet got tangled between turns three and four, bringing out a red flag to clean the track. Carlton had to go to the pits. On the restart Wayne Anderson tried to low side in an attempt to pass his dad, but didn't quite make it. "I had to slow down and let them hang there," Dick Anderson said. "I had to make sure I didn't slip in the stay-dry that was on the track from the clean up. It was up to me to give the race away and I wasn't going to do that."

Dick Anderson's caution paid off but not so for son Wayne. On lap 120 Anderson skidded high between turns three and four. Collins seized the opportunity, shot low and underneath to take over second place. "I had a real good car," Collins said. "Like I said I have to thank Jimmy Cope and all my crew for the great car. I wasn't pushing the car in the first half, I wanted to save the tires. It doesn't do any good if you're not there on the last lap. We just took it easy and tried to finish." Wayne Anderson finish third. "I don't come down often enough but dad does," said Wayne Anderson who has been driving for 14 years less than half that of his dad. "To give that 00 a run for the money I feel like we've done our work. And it is great to come down and have a big show for all the great fans in a nice facility like this." In other races.

In the first event of the evening Mark Gimmler of Palm Beach Gardens won the race but Ted Durfee of Sarasota provided the excitement in the Desoto Speedway TQ Midgets. Running hard Durfee over compensated and went end over end down the front stretch spewing parts from his tumbling car. Durfee walked away from the wreck uninjured and watched as Gimmler took the checkered flag with Mike Elder of Bradenton in second and Ben Fritz of Ocala placing third.

Dale Reigle of Sarasota claimed his first feature win in the Express Personnel Service Street Stock feature event. "I owe it all to my crew chief Jimmy Osterhoff and all my sponsors," Reigle said. "Oh, man it was tough. I like racing with Rich. I gave him room on the outside but I wasn't about to let him have the inside. He ran tough but he's a good clean driver. He made it interesting." Rich Clouser of Grant took second in the action-packed feature with Dan Hall of Sarasota claiming third place.

For the second time of the night dad bettered the son when Rich's dad Rick Clouser of Grant grabbed his first ever feature win in the Contemporary Cabinetry & Closet Concepts Pure Stock feature event. "I've come here now for a couple of weeks and this is my first win," Clouser said. "I'm happy as heck. My son's been running here but I wanted something where I could have a little fun. I'm pumped up. It feels good. It's about a three hour drive from the east coast but this makes it worth it." Wayne Carroll of Sarasota, substituting for brother Doug placed second and Ed Kratzert of Bradenton took third place.

Mike Mitrisin of Brooksville broke a string of bad luck and grabbed the win in the Manatee Lumber Modified Minis feature event. "Six races in a row we broke," Mitrisin said. "I had to break that record. We painted flames on the car and that's what did it." Lee Davis of Lakeland placed second and Randy Koon of Lakeland took third.

Tommy Huffstutler of Bradenton returned to the winner's circle in the Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Stock Minis feature event. "It's been six or seven weeks since I was up front and I'm glad it was my turn," Huffstutler said. "The car is running pretty good and I'm glad it really came through for me this week." Jesse Dutilly of Bradenton placed second. Clay Joseph of Bradenton took third place.
