John Lovelady Wins Second Consecutive Big Bonus Challenge

It would appear that John Lovelady of Lakeland has found a new home at Citrus County Speedway. In his first two weeks of racing at the 1/4 mile facility he has had two wins in a row and banked $2,600 for his effort. He assured the crowd from Victory Lane that he will be back next week to see if he can pull off the hat trick for the $1,000 three in a row bonus in the Nick Nicholas Late Model Big Bonus Challenge.

Mike Bresnahan was the only driver that had anything for Lovelady who came off the outside pole to lead the race from flag to flag. Bresnahan started fifth in the 13-car field making some great passes on Tate Pierce, Forrest Goff and Perry Lovelady before he locked on to John Loveladys rear bumper for the final 10 laps. Bresnahan couldnt make the pass, as the second groove just wasnt there. Tate Pierce finished third and was the last car on the lead lap at the finish. The two heat winners, Dan Johnson and Al Lawrence, rounded out the top five in the 30-lap barnburner.

Sixteen Figure 8 racers provided a ton of intersection excitement in their 20-lap feature run. Point leader Gary Swing took the start from the rear challenge for an extra $250 plus going after the three in a row bonus of $200 but first time visitor Robbie Hage of St. Petersburg out powered the field for the win and Swing had to settle for second. Robert Aaron outran Al Barber and Larry Harris in the race for third. The race turned out to be survival of the fittest as seven cars had to drop out of the wild action due to mechanical problems or wrecks. Peanut Higgenbotham took a bad hit in the intersection that left him with an injured shoulder, otherwise there were no injuries reported.

Mike Veltman got back into the winners circle for the fifth time this season in another flag to flag win. John Gann Jr. and David Dollar were the only cars that had anything for Veltman but it wasnt enough and they had to settle for a second and third place finish. Johnny Sanders and Jimmy Wilson had their best finish of the year taking a fourth and fifth in the 20-lap main. Veltman and Gann won the heat races. It seemed to be the outside pole sitters night to fly as Sport Wilson raced Mike Bell for a couple of laps before taking the point and setting the pace for the win in the Street Stock feature. Don Teague advanced from his fifth starting position to hold out for second while Wayne Lewis outran Harley Wilson Sr. and John LeVecque for the balance of the top five positions. Heat winners were Wes Wilson, Wayne Lewis and Ernie Reed Jr.

Rick Coleman launched his pocket rocket out of the fourth starting position to capture his second consecutive win and third of the season. He will be going after the three in a row bonus next week. Mark Sowell put the pressure on in the final 10 laps of the 20-lap event. Point leader George Neumann held out for third being chased by Don Faunce and Rick Sermons. Frank Coleman and Curtis Yoamans captured the wins in the heat races.

J.D. Goff logged his fifth Hobby Stock win of the season over a 22 car field and is one of two drivers who have reached the five mark. Mike Ruff just couldnt make the outside groove work for him on at least 10 attempts to make the pass for the lead and had to settle for second. Glen Colyer took the early lead and fell back to a third place finish over Chris Hooker and last weeks winner Richie Smith. Heat winners were James Teague, Mickey Burns and Smith.

Roll cages are now required in the Street Legal Junker division and the field dropped from 20 to nine this week. Apparent winner Shawn Kipp was disqualified for rough driving and Dave Davis won, taking home the $50 win purse and an additional $50 from Carters Auto Recycling for his effort. Runners up were Rick Badessa and Jeff Franker.

In the run what you brung fans race, Izzy Cardona took his 89 Metro to the winners circle outrunning Ken Pierces 91 Z-28 in the 2 lap finale.
