Bronson Hosts Dwarf Cars

Don't ever let anybody tell you that "those little dwarf cars" are just "toys" that don't go very fast. These ferocious 5/8 scale replicas of 1940's and 50's cars SCREAM around the high banks with less than a fender's worth of daylight between them. Don Hess of Geneva, Fla. won the hotly contested event in his 1934 Ford coupe after battling Bryan Gringas ( 32 Ford) all night long. These two cars comprised the front row and ran side by side in both their heat race and the feature. Gainesville's own Jerry Heflin ran third in an event that was slowed three times for caution. Each re-start saw cars screaming, t hree abreast at times , through the corners. Their times , all in the 15 second bracket rivaled those of some of the fastest cars at the speedway in any division. They will be with us again on July 15. Be sure to mark your calendar for one of the really fun events of the year.

SUPER STOCK
Bronson native, Arthur Conquest brought his Rockoustic Systems/Bronson Ace Hardware Nova into victory circle again after being challenged throughout the feature by Wesley Keller and David Westrich. These powerful cars slid through turns two and four in an effort to pass one another. The first lap of the race saw some " paint swapping" as the four cars of Arthur Conquest, Jim Conquest, Brody Giddens, and David Westrich all tried to occupy the same piece of real estate on the main straightaway. As the field poured into turn one, Jim Conquest went around in his # 07 machine, leaving the rest of the field scrambling to avoid him. A complete re-start was necessary before the field went green. From their it was anybody's race as Brody Giddens tried to hold off the rest of the field. First, Wes Keller made a pass down low on Giddens and on lap 12, Arthur ( Conquest) made a beautiful " patented" bumper-draft pass on Keller and Giddens for the lead. He held this position for the remaining eight laps while Keller and Dave Westrich fought it out for second. THE FINISH : Arthur Conquest, Wesley Keller, and David Westrich, third.

PURE STOCK
Jerome Brown was out for his fourth consecutive win in this competitive division, but it was not to be, as his car cut a tire early in the race. Jerome scooted into the pits for a new tire, but lost two laps under green flag racing conditions. Gerry Hodge ( # 37 ) had the lead and was building on it when his car slid out from under him on lap # 15. John Hughes ( # 77 ) and Jason Holbrook ( # 15) had to thrash their way to the front and Holbrook was ready when Hodge spun. He darted under Hodge's spinning car with Hughes in hot purstuit. The final five laps ran this way with Holbrook, Hodge, and Hughes the only cars on the lead lap at the finish. Hughes gave chase, but Jason ( Holbrook) was not to be denied as he won his first feature of the season.

MINI-STOCK
An unexpected turn of events saw the opportunity for a father and son battle in the Mini-Stock feature. Veteran campaigner Charlie Stalnaker suffered injuries in a truck highway accident earlier in the week and was unable to race his # 11 entry from Ocala. Lil"J". Jeff Stalnaker, Jr. was offered his first ride in the seat of the # 11 car and gave up his ride in his 4-cylinder cruiser for the nite. The father son duel never did materialize but they were fun to watch. Josh Har's had his # 04 Dr, Jay's machine going strong Saturday nite and pulled off a beautiful win over William Stalnaker, who finished third. " I told you we'd be back!", an elated Josh told me after the race. Josh had trouble with his car the past two outings and he was as excited about his win as were his fans.

4 CYLINDER CRUISERS
It was a three car " shootout" that was scheduled for the feature Saturday nite, but Mitch Clenny's Gator Family Haircutters entry was unable to make the start, leaving an interesting combination. Ryan Nagele, who is developing quickly into a quality veteran driver was about to challenge John Nabor in his Papa "J''s mini-truck. This was to be a sort of "David and Goliath" affiair, because Nabor has been practically unbeatable in the truck. Ryan made a heck of a race of it, trying several times to get Nabor down low on the inside. This was the fast way around the " Bullring" for everybody Saturday nite and Nagele tried to make it work, but came up just a little short at the end.

Be sure to be with us this Saturday nite, when the powerful Late Model Sportsman machines come-a-calling. They will run the 50-lap Dash for Cash that has become so popular at the " bullring" this year. The rest of the Bronson Race Series cars will also be there. Gates open at 5:30 and racing is at 7:30 PM. See ya'll there.
