Jim Nall Claims Sportman at Hialeah

Jim Nall survived a controversial crash to come back and win the 25 lap late model sportsman feature event Saturday night at Hialeah Speedway.

Starting from the pole in his jet black Pontiac, Nall quickly had Charlie Coyle all over his back bumper as the youngster tried to work past the leader. Finally, on lap 10, Coyle appeared to have the advantage on the inside, but the two tangled and a half dozen cars were involved. Nall went back to the point while Coyle elected not to continue. Danny Maddox pressured Nall in the late laps to no avail and finished second over points leader Bob Regula, Tim Shaffner and Gary McGoron.

John Covington used a nice outside move to get past leader Chalo DeCastro on lap 16 and went on to win the 25 laps street stock main. Rick Lutz led to lap 14 when he slipped and DeCastro took over but one lap later it was Covington ahead for the win. DeCastro checkered second ahead of Bob Hogan, Lutz and Mike Orth in the final rundown.

Former track champion David Russell dominated the mini stock run for his third win this season. Scott Rogers paced the first five laps until he slipped and Russell took advanage to win the 25 lap run. Point leader Kenny Strong got past Rogers in the late laps for second with Rogers, Eddie Lowery and Bill Miner rounding out the top finishers.

Mike Powers took the lead in the cyclone 25 lapper when Danny Chance spun on lap 17 and hustled to his second win of the year. Chance and Rick Lenhardt battled hard for many laps before tangling and sending Chance spinning. Lenhardt collected second money over Mike Crehan, C.J. Haycraft and Mark Schoedinger.

Schoedinger came back to dominate the 15 lap figure 8 feature.
