Westrich holds off Roberts in Bronson Super Stock Win

by Gil Peck

All divisions ran exceptionally clean and close races in Saturday's features at the high banked Bronson Speedway, affectionately known as the " bullring" ..

One heart stopping moment did occur in the practice warm-ups before the evening's events were underway. Tommy Ausburn lost control of his #69 Pure Stock in turn one and slammed the retaining wall, vaulted over it, and landed outside the speedway. His car was destroyed as both the engine and transmission separated from the car and landed about twenty feet from the wreck. Tommy was unhurt. "That car was so beautiful--and she treated me so well this year with runs near the front. She'll be hard to replace", said Tommy. The roll cage did it's job and stood up perfectly. This is a credit to the safety and care with which the participants build their cars for action at the" bullring".

PURE STOCKS
Jerome Brown is making a habit of visiting Victory Lane this year in his # 25 Cheifland Flea Market Camaro. Jerome started on the inside of row # 3 and had his hands full in the early going as Aaron Andrews ( # 20 ) and John Hughes ( # 77 ) fought side by side for the lead. Patience prevailed as Jerome bided his time, then slid by on the inside with a beautiful pass on Hughes coming out of turm # 2 on lap eleven of the twenty lap feature. Andrews dropped to third late in the race. His car finally had a good outing and ran strong all nite.

MINI-STOCKS
Jeff Stalnaker, Sr. had his # 10 Robert Austin Pinto going strong and was tough to catch as he notched a win in the Mini- Stock division. Josh Hars was second in his Dr. Jay's entry from Williston. "The carhad a terrible push all nite", said Josh. " We'll get it straightend outand be back next week. " this likeable and popular competitor told me after the race. William Stalnaker had a nice run in his # 59 BMW entry from Ocala. William has worked hard on this car, while he graciously gives most of his time to other competitors and to Chad Dixon, a young man making his mark in the four cylinder cruisers. It'snice to see him have a good finish in this very competitive division. Larry Goolsby had a scary ride as he dove into the pits for some fast repairs on his # 27 Cheifland Machine shop entrty on lap # 2. Upon re-entering the track he was greeted by two spinning cars in front of him in turn four. Some quick thinking and super driving on Larry's part avoided contact with these machines and further damage. These cars always provide fast, close up action as they compete in the Bronson Race Series every Saturday nite.

SUPER STOCKS
Dave Westrich and Donnie Roberts thrilled the crowd for the entire twenty lap feature as they battled for the lead in this " thunder and lightning" division. Roberts had his Mayo Express # 24 right on Westrich's bumper as he tried several times to find a way round the #38 Monte Carlo. Westrich kept the car " real wide" and held on for the win. Arthur Conquest finished third in the Rockoustic Drywall Systems #70. These powerful cars are with us every week. Come on out and watch them turn an asphlat surface into a dirt track drive as they powerslide through the corners.

4 - CYLINDER CRUISERS
You know, for a class that is supposed to be for rookies and first time drivers, these young men are starting to look like real pros!John Naber notched the win in his # 3 mini-truck again. What else is new?--- as Ryan Nagele and Lil "J" battled it out for second. Chad Dixon finished fourth and Mitch Clenny notched a fifth place in his Gator Haircutters # 00. " Naber is going to take next week off, as he travels to Charlotte to watch the Winston Cup guys, so some of the other guys will have a chance for a win!"-- one of his fellow competitors jokingly told me.

Come on out and see for yourself this week why we call this speedway the" action" track . Racing at the "bullring" starts at 7:30 PM.
