Floral City Gang, Gangs up On Citrus Street Stocks

Weley Wilson

Mother’s Day was celebrated in a big way at Citrus County Speedway Saturday with carnations for all the Moms who came through the pit and front gate from the Women’s Racing Club. Floral bouquets for the oldest mom (89 year old Bonnie White), Edna Wilson with 7 off spring at the races for the most kids and Arlene Pugner traveling from the greatest distance, from Redding Connecticut, to come to the races.

Seventeen races and time trials for the Southern Pro Trucks filled the action packed night for the whole family. The matron of the Floral City Gang, Virginia Wilson, got the best gift of all from her family as the threesome took the top three spots in the Street Stock 20 lap main event. Son Wes won the pole on the pile draw after taking the win in the 1st heat and drew the 0 pill for the straight up start. He then turned down the option of going for a $1000 win purse if he would start from the rear of the field. Wes proceeded to set the pace for the entire 20 laps with a mirror full of brother Sport right to the checkers. Plenty of action was taking place behind them where Harley Wilson Sr., who started 13th, avoided several mishaps on route to his third place finish. Don Teague and Ernie Reed Jr. took the balance of the top five spots.

Local Southern Pro Truck hot shoe, Richie Powers turned his home race track in a 14.388 qualifying run for fast time, drew the zero pill for the straight up start and cleaned the 10 truck fields plow in a flag to flag run in the 60 lap main for his very first truck win. Eddie Hartinheld off the numerous attempts of Jeff Sloan in the run for second. Bruce Gaskins and teammate Terry Woodard locked on to fourth and fifth in the run for the flag. At this juncture in the Southern Pro Truck series, lack of participation in the first five races and cancellations at scheduled tracks may mark the demise for the series.

Travis Nichols looked like he was going to smoke the Limited Sportsman field for his second win in a row but a caution flag in lap 10 ended his dominate run with what appeared to be a major oil leak that developed during the caution. He was able to get back in the race after a brief stop to the pits but his night was over moving to the rear of the 17-carfield on the restart. Eighth starting Jim Smith took the point and fought off the charges of Johnny Gann and Mike Veltman for his second win of his rookie season in the division. Johnny Sanders had his bestrun of the season with a fourth place finish ahead of Bill Oestreicher.

Mini Stock point leader George Neumann logged his third feature win overtaking Kevin Harrod at the mid point of the 20-lap event. Harrod held on for second after getting turned around by Rick Coleman. John Coleman salvaged a third just ahead of his father Frank and Don Faunce.

Rookie, Richie Smith, took his very first trip to Victory Lane holding off Chris Hooker who bounced back into the point lead with his second place finish and his 6th heat win. Mike Ruff rounded out the top three for the youngsters in the division. J.D. Goff was denied his three in a row bonus having to settle for fourth just ahead of Allen Jacobson who slipped from the lead in the early part of the race to fifth at the checkers.

Saturday night will see the return of the Late Models in the Pennington Cabinets “Big Purse Challenge” for $1,300 to win plus the option of going for an additional $1,500 if the winner elects to startfrom the rear of the field and a possible $2,800 win purse. Figure 8’s are back for their fifth race of the season plus Limited Sportsman,Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Hobby Stocks and Street Legal Junkers.
