Veltman Captures Triple Win Bonus

(Inverness, Fl. 04/22/00) He either wins them or doesn’t finish. Mike Veltman performed his “magic” for the third time in a row in Limited Sportsman action Saturday night at Citrus County Speedway. Pulling off the stock car hat trick earned him a $200 bonus, the first to becollected on the added purse this season. In 6 races, Veltman has been to the winner’s circle four times and was unable to finish the other two times out. He looks like he may be on the way to matching his 13 wins in 1999 and capturing another point championship. Sixteen of 18 registered cars took the green in the 20 lap-main with Veltman taking the point in lap seven. Pole sitter Jim Smith was unable to hold on to the lead but hung on to Veltman for the final 13 laps.Benny Stevenson was the designated driver for Rodney Cox, in his first Limited Sportsman race in a couple of years and managed to hold off a three car run for the spot by Travis Nichols, John Gann and Bill Oestreicher. Travis Nichols turned Stevenson around on the run for the checkers and was sent back to a 9th place finish. Stevenson retained his third spot with John Gann and Bill Oestreicher rounding out the top five. Rex Struble and John Gann picked up the heat wins. Mike Bresnahan picked up some more cushion in his point lead and hissecond “Big Purse Challenge” in the Late Model Hoosier Tire Big Purse Challenge. He will be going for a three in a row bonus next Saturday night. Robert Elting, Richard Pratt, Brad Atkins and Fred Stoner tookthe checkers in that order. Perry Lovelady won the first heat and ate the third turn wall early in the feature run. Herb Neumann Jr. won the second heat but fell back to an 8th place finish when he lost it on turn three late in the feature run. Wes Wilson outran a 28-car field for his second win of the season in the Street Stock 20 Lap main event. Brother Sport Wilson gave it all hehad in an effort to catch Wes in the final laps but had to settle for second ahead of Victor Stanley, Travis Nichols and Danny Cretty. Curtis Flanagan, Sport Wilson and Robbie Yoakam won the heat races. Mark Sowell snatched the lead away from Frank Coleman late in the MiniStock feature to pick up his second win in a row and he too will be going for the triple win bonus next week. Fifteen cars took the greenflag and early leader Rick Coleman mysteriously dropped out of the race when it looked like he would blow the field away. When the checkers flew, Mark Sowell, George Neumann, Don Faunce, Curtis Yoamans and Kevin Harrod locked on to the top five spots. Frank Coleman was disqualified in tech for refusing to be P & G’d. Heat winners were Sowell and Don Faunce. Chris Hooker will be the third driver going for a three in a row bonus next week, capturing his fourth checkered flag of the young season in the Hobby Stock feature Saturday night. Richie Smith, Mike Ruff, J.D.Goff and Roy Perkins picked up the other top five spots. Tech inspection found apparent third place finisher Mike Bell illegal. Glen Colyer, MikeRuff and Richie Smith were the heat winners. A nineteen-car Street Legal Junker field took the green flag and Jeff Franker took a wire-to-wire win over Joe Donahue, Rick Badessa and Stuart Madison. Next week will be “Kids Night” and an opportunity for the up and coming race drivers of tomorrow to take a ride in a racecar at intermission.Late Models, Limited Sportsman, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Hobby Stocksand Street Legal Junkers will be in action for a full program. MikeBresnahan will be going after a $1000 triple win bonus and Mark Sowelland Chris Hooker will be after a $200 triple win bonus to make the action more interesting.
