Punta Gorda, Florida – The first leg of the Budweiser Open Wheel Modified 6-Pack Series took place on April 1 at Charlotte County Speedway. Fast qualifier was Dwayne Dempsey (St. Petersburg) and the rest of the drivers were hoping an April Fools Joke was being played on them when Dempsey pulled the pole position pill, as well.

Dempsey led the race from the get-go with Jimmy Thompson (Pinellas Park) following in second, until Wayne “Rocket Man” Jefferson (Pinellas Park) got around him on the 26th lap. A wreck on the 39th lap collected several cars including Series Champion Chris Turner (Naples) and Joe Winchell (Hollywood) who ended up on top of the car of Mike Gamache (Palm Harbor) and the track was under red flag conditions until the mess was cleaned up. When the green flag flew again all three cars were able to continue. Although Jefferson did his utmost to pass Dempsey in the remaining laps, Dempsey held on for an exciting win, leaving Jefferson! second and Thompson third.

The Big Wheels Mini Stocks started their evening off on a bad note, being sent to the pits to cool off after be unable to get their race started despite three complete restarts. They came back to race at the end of the evening and Jason Kuykendall (Punta Gorda) took the win, followed by Keith Risinger (Fort Myers) and Frank Welch (North Fort Myers). Kuykendall also took a heat win, as did Harland Wilson (Port Charlotte).

Q Country Pure Stocks. Kevin Utter (Fort Myers) led the first 11 laps of the Q Country Pure Stock feature until Greg “Spiderman” Anderson (Port Charlotte) passed him for the lead but a wreck caused the field to revert back to last completed lap and Utter retook the lead. Joe Reese (Bonita Springs) took the lead on the 18th lap and although Chuck Sweet (Port Charlotte) tried to give Reese a run for the lead, Reese held on to take the feature win, as well as a heat win earlier in the evening. Utter was disqualified in post-technical inspection after finishing third, which moved Mark Ludvigsen (Fort Myers Beach) into third. Ludvigsen also took home a heat trophy.

Twenty nine cars started the Road Warrior feature and the caution-filled race continued until the 19th lap when a huge wreck occurred, leaving the field finishing in the last completed lap. Del Beckner (Naples) took the win after leading the entire race, and was followed by fellow Pine Ridge Gang teammates, Points Leader Denny Ray (Naples) and Bob Williams (Naples). Chris Oncken (Fort Myers) and Terry Price (Punta Gorda) were heat winners.

A wreck on the 8th lap in the Sportsman division took out the cars of Jeremy Goddard (Naples),Buzz Martin (Lehigh Acres) and Cliff Bifaro (Naples). A three car freight train of Raymond “Super Frog” Jones (Arcadia), Jerry Bryant (Punta Gorda) and Mark Chapman (Fort Myers) led the way to the checkered flag for a 1-2-3 finish. Heat winners were Gene Connell (Arcadia) and Bifaro.
