Charlotte County Speedway Enduro

Charlotte County Speedway brought the Millenium in with a bang ... and a crash or two with the New Year's Eve of Destruction and the New Year's Hangover Enduro. Over 60 cars participated in the 200-lap Hangover Enduro but by the end of the race only 24 finished. An Enduro race is a Demolition Derby run on an oval track. There are no caution flags; only a red flag is thrown to stop the race for safety reasons or if the track becomes completely blocked by wrecked cars. Competitors must dodge cars all over the track to race to checkered flag.

Victor Leo (Miami) led most of the race with Enduro Legend, Danny Chance (Miami), hot on his tail. Chance was finally able to pass Leo to lead the race but eventually was involved in a racing altercation which caused him to make a trip to the pits due to a flat tire. Leo continued to lead until Robert Ray snuck up and moved around him to take the win. Matt Scheffler (Auburndale) also passed Leo to finish second, leaving Leo third. Ted Filides and Roger Bohannon rounded out the Top Five.

The New Year's Eve of Destruction was also dominated by Victor Leo as he took the overall points for the evening. Leo took the win in the Blindfold Race, in which the driver is blinfolded and manuever their way around the track with the assistance of a co-pilot. Leo's father, Jim Leo, was the co-pilot who led his son to victory. Leo also won the Fan Participation race in his Ford Mustang.

Charlotte County Speedway's own Hope Summey (Punta Gorda) took the win in the 50-lap Women's Enduro. The first 25-laps of the Men/Women's was won by Terry Gay; after the men raced the first 25 laps, their female partners climbed in the cars to run the final 25 laps. Debbie Cox (Middleburg) took the win leaving local track favorite, Kim Scheffler-Hays (Auburndale) to finish second.

Twenty-nine cars took the green flag for the Reverse Race, in which the cars race in the opposite direction and turn right instead of left. Enduro winner, Robert Ray, took the win. Roger Bohannon took the win in the 4 X 4 Race where the cars run four laps forward and four laps backwards. Bohannon also took the win in the Four Car Elimination Drags.

The three car team of Mike Gamache, Bob Snodgrass, and Mason Love won the Train Race. The three cars were chained together to whip their way around the track with one car providing horsepower and one providing brakes.

The Eve of Destruction came to a close with Paul Revere's Midnight Ride. The lights of the track were turned off as 36 cars made their way around the track with only a flashlight to light their way. Road Warrior driver, Terry Price (Punta Gorda) has been racing at CCS long enough to be able to drive in the dark and took the win.

Charlotte County Speedway will be participating in the Salute to Racing 2000 Motorsports Expo at the Sarasota Fair Grounds on January 8 and 9. The Annual Driver's Banquet will take place on Friday, January 21 at Victoria Estates Country Club in Port Charlotte. The WWF Monster Trucks will be at CCS the weekend of January 29-30 for a special event. Regular racing will not resume until after Speed Week in mid-February.
