| NEW WINNERS RULE IN SATURDAY’S SPEEDROME SPRING PROGRAM | The Home of the World Figure 8® hosted round three of the 9th annual Spring Fling Championship series on a crisp Saturday afternoon. The Speedrome opened the gates and many striving for success race teams stepped through ready to play. The Peters Auto Service Hornets, Roadrunners, and Hornet Figure 8’s had a quest for points in this penultimate event of the campaign. Also on hand were the Legends and Bandoleros with checkered flags in their sights.
The Peters Auto Service Hornets first ventured into their oval portion of the day. A pair of Late Model pilots made a mark on the 20-lap main event. “Kid Rocket” Chad Sizemore collected the victory from a great starting spot. Third generation star Ben Tunny held on for the runner-up position after a spirited battle with Fall Festival champion Nigel Peters. In the Figure 8, it was veteran division competitor Casey Davis capturing his initial win on the crossover course. The former Spring and Fall king bested a fast closing Kyle Byrd and point leader Peters at the finish. Cassidy Worden, Davis, and Peters won heats earlier in the show.
The Roadrunners, the elder statesmen of the Spring Fling series, had another hot fight for supremacy in the days action. The car that was tops on the afternoon was the “News Cruiser” driven by Rex Cox II. The veteran got a nice jump on the start and rolled home to his first victory of 2009. Defending Spring Fling champ Jeff Johnson came away the runner-up for the second straight main with opening round winner Randy Burchfield finalizing the podium.
Two new faces topped the results in the cars built by 600 Racing out of Charlotte, North Carolina. In the Bandolero division, third-generation Speedrome speedster Jack Dossey III carved his way to a first career triumph in the class. The reigning Bandit track champion held off ever-improving Chris Hacker and Zachery Freeman at the finish line. The Legend category saw former Modified series point’s runner-up RJ Norton III take top honors over teammate Billy VanMeter. Newcomer Jean Breeden ended his day in the third position.
