Bryan Howland Crowned 2008 ASCS Patriot Championship and Plans to Defend in 2009

By Rich Vleck

ROCHESTER, NY -January 24, 2009- With the calendar and the talk of the night on 2009, Bryan Howland was honored as the second driver to score a second Patriot Championship in 2008.

The 21-year-old Auburn, NY resident picked up the “Triple Crown of the Patriots”, capturing the Gater Hard Charger, A-Verdi King of Central New York and Overall Titles, earning $3250 in cash, $800 in contingencies, a pair of championship jackets, and a trophy that stood taller than he.

“It feels good to be back on top again this year,” noted Howland. “The team was working really good, like a well-oiled machine. A lot of things went right for us.” Howland waited until halfway through the year to bust his two-year hiatus from Victory Lane. When he final scored a win, he did it in style in the $3000-to-win ASCS Northern Summer Nationals at Ohsweken Speedway. Six days later he was once again a winner at Brewerton. His picked up his third win at Stateline in an event that had been delayed since June because of rain. Back in June, Howland had flipped in hot laps and was facing a disastrous hit in the points when the rains came. It was breaks like these that helped him through the long season.

Along with his wins, Howland and the Filtrec Corporation No. 51 had top runs in major events including a 4th in the Ollie’s Challenge event at Sharon, 3rd in the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals at Ohsweken and closed the season with a 3rd at The Sprint Car Challenge Rolling Wheels.

As he concluded his acceptance speech, Howland raise his thumb in the air when asked about coming back in 2009 to defend his crown and attempt to be the first 3-time ASCS Patriot Champion. “Flyin’ Bryan” will no doubt be the odds-on favorite heading into the opener in May.

A total of 19 drivers were honored on the night, 16 from the overall point standings, Doug Emery, who was part of the A-Verdi King of Central New York Top-10, Rick Wilson, who was co-Watlon’s Farm and Auto Repair Hard Charger of Central New York with Bobby Breen and Robbie Shuttleworth, who was part of the Insinger Race Fuels/ Danny Willmes Enterprises Rookie of the Year Point Fund.

Along with the $17,500 in cash and $8000 in contencies paid out, three top prizes were also drawn for at the end of the night. Kyle Moffit, who received an award earlier in the night for having the Worst Average Draw for heat lineups, was the lucky recipient of a new set of Brodix Heads. Gary Troutman took home a give-a-way for the second year in a row, picking up an axle ratchet from PJ Motorsports. Joe August Jr. won a six-point harness seat belt set from Motorsports Safety Systems.

Special Awards on the night included the Insinger Rookie of the Year, which went to Bubba Broderick of Brookfiled, CT, who also was honored for having the Best Appearing Car. Perfect Attendance Award winners Jared Zimbardi and Chris Muhleisen each took additional hardware for Sportsmanship and Hard Luck, respectively. Scott Kreutter was given the title of Patriot of the Year. Championship wrench Dale Roloson was named Mechanic of the Year. Apparel Trailer Coordinators Rich and Judie Vleck were honored for their Dedication to Motorsports. The banquet began with Regional Director Mike Emhof announcing that Lucas Oil would be the Title Sponsor of the series for 2009. There involvement, along with others, has helped the Patriots to raise the nightly purse by $1,200 and provide a minimum $1,750-to-win each event. As the banquet concluded, he announced the plan for the “Five Crown Tour”, adding to the excitement created by the A-Verdi King of Central New York Series in the last two years by added mini-series along the St. Lawrence, Golden Horseshoe, Southern Tier and in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Those additions allowed Emhof to guarantee $30,000 in cash in the 2009-point fund, nearly double the 2008 figure. With at least 17 tracks and 28 dates on the 2009 schedule, things are very promising for the upcoming year. While a number of race dates were announced, the complete schedule will be released in a few short weeks. For more information, visit www.ASCSracing.com.
