Ohio Speedweek Night Three: Stevie Smith is King of the Hill at Hilltop Speedway

Camargo, IL (6-23-09) – Up until tonight Stevie Smith had not placed outside of the top-five during Ohio Speedweek action, but he had yet to win. He changed that fact tonight as he grabbed the lead a fourth of the way through the O’Reilly All Star Circuit of Champions event and drove on to a dominant win establishing himself as the leader in the Ohio Speedweek point standings.

At the beginning of tonight’s A-main, Tim Shaffer and Dean Jacobs shared the front row and once the Green Flag flew they stayed side-by-side throughout the first lap with Shaffer having a slight edge at the end of the first lap. The first caution of the night came out on Lap 2 for Jason Dolick.

On the restart it was Shaffer showing the way and Stevie Smith was on the move. First he closed in on the 59 of Jacobs and by the third lap he had stole the second position with a move on the high side. Smith then set his eye on the lead. He worked on Shaffer on the low side before moving to the high side. Shaffer moved low, but was nearly collected by a lapped car. On Lap 8 the yellow flag would fly again for the 89g of David Gravel.

Shaffer once again got a jump on the restart, but Smith picked up where he left off trying to reel the 83 car in. When the duo was working traffic on Lap 12, Smith made his move. He continued to work the high side and it finally paid off. Once he got into the lead Smith pulled away from the field.

While Smith was in the front skillfully working traffic, Brandon Martin came to life around Lap 15 and started his climb towards the front of the pack. At the front Shaffer was trying about every line he could to gain some ground on Smith, but the gap between the two was steadily growing. Smith was lapping cars that are normally contending for the win in All Star competition.

On Lap 26, Smith avoided near disaster when he made contact with the wall while working in traffic, this allowed Shaffer to close again, but Smith held on to the lead. There was a fanatic moment on the track with Daron Clayton nearly got together with Steve Lines, but Smith dodged the two cars and everyone on track continued to battle. The top three were still Smith, Shaffer, and Jacobs.

On Lap 31 the caution flag would fly again. This time it was for the 5h of Tim Hunter who got into the first turn hot and could not avoid the wall, while running in the top-five. On the restart Smith would have five lapped cars between him and his nearest competitor. When the Green Flag was unfurled Jacobs got the jump moving himself into the second position. With six to go Martin got around the 83 for third as the handling on the Shaffer’s car appeared to go away with five laps to go.

On Lap 38 with just two laps remaining the final caution of the event came out for Jason Dolick who climbed the fence in between turns one and two. At this point Shaffer went to the pits to have his car examined and joined the field for the final two laps at the back of the pack.

With a two lap shoot out remaining, Martin made his final move. The White Flag was waving high as he was still running third, but decided it was time to try once more for second. At the finish line it was Smith, with Martin edging out Jacobs in the final turn on the final lap of the race. Terry McCarl and Rob Chaney rounded out the top-five.

This was Smith’s fourth All Star victory this season. The first came during Florida Speedweek at Volusia County Speedway, while the other two came in his home state of PA at Port Royal Speedway. Overall this is Smith’s tenth career All Star win.

Tomorrow night Ohio Speedweek will move to Waynesfield Raceway Park for the fourth night of racing action. The gates will open at 4:00 pm and racing action is slated to begin at 7:00 pm. Tickets for the event start at $20 for adults, ages 16 – 11 are $15, while ages 10 and under are free. Pit Passes for the event will run $30. For more information on the event you can call the track office at (419) 568-3201 or visit www.waynesfieldmotorsportspark.com.

Winner’s Quote Stevie Smith “It was a great win. My team gave me a great race car and we had some good breaks. We missed a couple of crashes, I do not know how. We were pretty fortunate and had a good night. We had a good car for the distance. It felt like it kept getting better. We are going to try to carry this momentum for the rest of Speedweek. There are a lot of good racers out there, so it is going to be a fight.”
Second Place Brandon Martin “This feels like a win to us. It has been a rough couple of weeks. We hadn’t finished a feature in the last three races and Sunday night was just terrible. I have so many great people behind me, including my wife back home, my sister, my mom and dad. This feels good. Stevie is good here, I ran behind him here a few years ago. He is a great guy. There are 42 guys here in the pits; there were 48 on Saturday and 62 on Sunday. We have a good fast race car, so it feels good to be here.”
Third Place Dean Jacobs “The damage on my wing was really not enough to slow me down. My right rear tire gave up a little bit after that last yellow flag. We were not going to catch Stevie, he was in a league of his own, but we should have had second. I am a little disappointed in myself; I guess I should have run harder. You never know on these tracks. It is a little dusty. We ended up third, so we will take that.”
