McCumbee Finishes 13th at Texas Motor Speedway

IRVING, Texas, (June 5, 2009) After two “sets” of pit stops throughout the race for the crew to work on the handling of the tiwi Chevrolet, Chad McCumbee was able to hold on to an ill-handling truck to finish thirteenth at Texas Motor Speedway Friday night.

McCumbee started seventh and quickly moved up to fourth in the opening laps of the race. But fighting a tight chassis that was putting additional stress on the right front tire, McCumbee remained patient on the track until the first round of pit stops which came under yellow following a caution on lap 40 of the 167-lap event.

Team co-owner and crew chief Bobby Dotter called for the removal of a spring rubber from the left-rear tire. With NASCAR Camping World Truck Series rules dictating that teams can either take fuel or tires on a pit stop -- but not both -- the team elected to go ahead and pit twice under that caution to make the necessary adjustments, take tires and refuel. The two pit stops led to a loss of track position and McCumbee restarted the race in the sixteenth position.

The result of the adjustments was a truck that then was too loose and after another set of pit stops under green on laps 103 and 104, McCumbee went down one lap from the leaders. Nine trucks were then on the lead lap and seven were one lap down. The handling was still an issue and after restarting sixteenth once again in a truck that he could barely hang on to, McCumbee fought hard and picked up three additional positions before the conclusion of the event which was won by veteran driver Todd Bodine.

“Losing track position after the first round of pit stops is what got us tonight,” said McCumbee. “But the guys did a great job and we were able to get a thirteenth out of this tiwi Chevrolet. I had a huge vibration in the truck so I think there was a bigger issue with the rear end.

“I want to thank tiwi for coming on board with us for the last two weeks and we look forward to having them on board again with us in Chicago in August and Las Vegas in September.”

McCumbee remains eighth in NASCAR Camping World Truck Series standings, 162 points behind new points leader Matt Crafton, but only 27 points out of fifth place. The NCWTS will travel to the Michigan International Speedway on Saturday June thirteenth for the Michigan 200.
