| CHAMPIONSHIP NIGHT AT ACE SPEEDWAY | By Brenda Murphy
ALTAMAHAW, N.C. -October 19, 2008-You could feel the excitement in the air from the first moment of practice. So much was on the line for so many different drivers. All some could do was to have their teams and cars prepared as best as possible and them let fate take over from there.
Mebane’s Speedy Faucette did everything he could to clinch the title. Faucette set pole, and won his12th. race of the year. As fate would have it, at the end of the night, Speedy needed only one more car to finish between him and Burlington’s Dean Fogleman for him to win the Late Model Stock premier class championship. It was not to be.
Fogleman after 18 years of racing and only one Late Model victory became the 2008 Late Model Stock Champion of Ace Speedway. Faucette led every lap from green to checkered flag. Until lap 48, with Dane Rudolph and Gary Causey keeping Fogleman in the fourth position, it looked like the title was his. Until Gary Causey with 27 laps remaining, started having problems with the handling on his car.
Fogleman was able to pass him and finish in the third position behind Australia’s Dane Rudolph and secure the title.
The Limited Sportsman title was won by Pelham’s John Moore who placed third in Saturday’s race. Eden’s Bobby Griffin was the race winner with Justin Newlin finishing second. It was the first points title for Moore who has been a great competitor all year.
The Mini Stock division had the closest championship chase of the classes at Ace Speedway. Michael Tucker started the night with a two point advantage over A. J. Sanders. On lap 22 of the 25 lap feature race, Sanders blew an engine leading the race and Tucker, running second, got into the oil from Sanders care and took a hard hit into the wall. Crews for Tucker and Sanders worked feverishly to repair the damage and get the cars back on the track. It was not to be for either car. With the points tied, Ace scoring officials had to sort through past results and eventually claim Tucker the Chase Champion. It came down to the most wins of the season with Tucker having nine and Sanders having eight. It was the first points title for Tucker in the Mini Division. Mocksville’s Archie Sanders, father to A. J., and only six points out of the points lead, won the race. Glen Hamilton and Andrew Sanders rounded out the top three.
Keith Brame, after starting from the rear of the pack, won both the Championship and the race in the Xtreme Divison. Keith Spake finished second and Jerry Kernodle finished third in the 18 car field. There was no doubt who the champion would be in Xtreme as Brame had dominated the class all year.
Modified Division crowned Brad Allen as their champion in the last race at Ace. This weeks race was won by Gary Young, Jr. of Burlington and Randy Butner of Pfafftown finished second. Third place was Richard Thomas of Salisbury. It was a non-points race for that division.
