| 75 Lap Super Late Model Race Highlights Final Two Weekends at Jennerstown | by Jeremy Yoder
JENNERSTOWN, PA(Aug. 18) Most races for the super late model division require the driver to have a good car for 40 laps. This coming weekend that won’t cut it.
With the season rapidly drawing to a close, Jennerstown Speedway has announced that it will host a 75 lap super late model invitational race on Aug. 23. It will be one of the final two events of the season for the Laurel Highlands track.
“We didn’t have any confirmed dates for an extra-lap event,“ said Jennerstown race director Ted Feitt. “Things just came into place here where we could do one on the 23rd.”
With an enlarged purse to the winner, the event is drawing the interest of super late model drivers from areas such as Western Pennsylvania, Holland, N.Y. and Lancaster, N.Y.
Also adding incentive to drivers is a free, hour-long practice session on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Aug. 30 marks championship night at Jennerstown Speedway. The champions of all three regular divisions will be crowned and given trophies at the conclusion of the scheduled competition. The evening will feature regular three division racing action, as well as a mini-cup feature, and will be accented by an autograph session for all the fans.
Prior to the evening’s racing drivers will park their cars on the front straight. The front straight gates will then be opened allowing the fans to seek out pictures and autographs of their favorite drivers.
The chases for the championships at Jennerstown are tight this year making the last two weekends very meaningful for the drivers.
Jason Mignogna of Greensburg currently leads the super late model points chase by a slim four points over Barry Awtey of Jenners. Awtey beat Mignogna for his second super late model championship last year by 26 points.
The street stock division championship is just as close with Jim Bodziak of Stoystown leading the way by four points over Thomas Knight Sr. of Monroeville and six points over Lauren Butler of West Mifflin and Andrew Kostelnik of North Braddock.
Last years hobby stock division champion Eugene Zerfoss of Acosta is looking for a repeat as he currently sits atop the hobby stock division by four points over last years runner-up Steve Long of Rockwood and eight points over Deidre Petrie of Greensburg.
Gates for both events open at 5:30 p.m. with racing starting at 7:30 p.m. Admission for both events is $10 for adults 16 and over, $5 for youth ages 12 to 15 and children 11 and younger are admitted free. Visit www.jennerstown.com for more information.
