SHORT TRACK RACING NEWS
| Awtey is Victorious at Jennerstown | by Jeremy Yoder
JENNERSTOWN, PA(Jul. 19) Barry Awtey won his first race of the season in the Super Late Model feature. Overcoming two early cautions on laps two and four, Awtey jumped to an early lead and was able to hold it the endurance of the race.
“It’s probably the best it’s been all year,” Awtey said of his car. “It was getting loose towards the end. I’m glad we ran out of laps.” Points leader Jason Mignogna pulled close to Awtey late in the race, but was never able to get around him and finished second. Meyersdale, Pa.’s Mark Smith was able to hold off Larry Behanna to finish third and Todd Price rounded out the top five.
“Jason and Mark are gonna be tough to beat at any race track,” said Awtey.
Lauren Butler took advantage of a second lap caution to jump out to an early lead in the Somerset Trust Street Stock division. Scott Bowman got tangled up with Adam Kostelnik and Dave Manns on the second lap giving Butler the chance to capitalize on the restart. Butler led the rest of the way to the finish overcoming late pressure from second place finisher Thomas Knight Sr. for her first win of the season. Finishing third was Bowman, who climbed back after being involved in the early accident. Fourth went to Andrew Kostelnik and Jason Holder finished fifth.
In the Hobby Stock division it was Jennerstown’s own Clifford Zerfoss stealing the show. Zerfoss managed to safely navigate a first lap accident to go on and lead the entire feature. While Zerfoss ran away with the lead the battle for second was tight. Deidre Petrie managed to hold off last week’s winner, Steve Long, to take the position. Long finished third while Eugene Zerfoss finished fourth followed by Matt Sever to complete the top five.
Regular racing will be suspended next week in lieu of the Hooters Pro Cup Series “Hooters Pro Cup 250”. Main gates open at 3:30PM with qualifying at 4:30PM and racing action starting at 7:00PM. There will also be an autograph session for the fans at 5:45PM. Advance tickets are available until the end of regular business on Thursday for $15/adult and $5 youth. Prices at the gate are $25/adult and $15/youth.
