| Wild night of competition at Toccoa Speedway | By Bill Kellett
Toccoa, GA -May 10, 2008- Saturday night at Toccoa Speedway race fans saw some of the wildest competition of the season. It was billed as the Hobby Championships but looked more like a demolition derby! It all started innocently enough with Bobby Hill taking the pole and the $75 special bonus. Hill took the lead as the cars roared into turn one and lead the rest of the way. A three car pile up in the early laps took out favorites David Grogan, Smokey Roberts and Boyd Speed. Hill went on to take the win.
The Bomber feature was also hotly contested. A $100 bounty had been placed on Wayne Beck who had won 8 to 10 races in a row. That streak came to a halt Saturday in the last event of the night. Ferrell Spivey took the win, but Beck had charged all the way from the back of the pack to second. One side note to the Bombers was that the race was run in what you’d have to call unusual conditions. After a fuse blew, melting the fuse box, leaving the first and second turns in the dark, cars and trucks turned on their headlights providing enough light to finish the night’s racing.
Other features were won by Doug English in the USA 1 Super Late Model; English looked impressive in his win over last week’s winner, Bruce Taylor of Toccoa. The Limited Late Model event kept fans cheering as Brothers Melvin and Wesley English battled. Melvin finally took the checkers with Wesley second.
George Reece Jr finally found his way to victory lane in the Crate late Model feature. Reece was the track champion last season and has his troubles this season finding the handle on a new car. Colby Harvey came home second in he Crate event. Justin Lord made it three out of four in the Stock Four’s edging out Randy Boshears of Franklin, NC. Nick Sellers took top honors in the Street Main event, with Bert hill second.
This Saturday the Limiteds have the night off but the Super Late Models will be going at it for $1200 to win. All other divisions will be racing too. Have an opinion on this story? E-MAIL KARNAC to send a letter to the editor!
