ARTHUR HAS $16,500 PAYDAY IN VICTORY LAP LATE MODELS AT VIRGINIA MOTOR SPEEDWAY

By Dave Seay

JAMAICA, VA -September 20, 2008- It came down to the final four laps of the 40 Lap Victory Lap Late Model feature to decide the 2008 Championship. With the crowd at their feet Walker Arthur of Forest, VA held off a late race challenge by Stevie Long of Mechanicsville, MD to take round 4 of the Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge presented by BB&T and the 2008 Victory Lap Late Model Championship at Bill Sawyer's Virginia Motor Speedway. The win netted Arthur $16,500.00, $10,000 for the Championship, a $5000 bonus for winning two of the four Challenge races and $1500 for the Fall Classic win.

Stevie Long and Walker Arthur started the 40 lap feature in a dead tie for the Championship. Arthur had the better hand starting on the front row with Long starting eighth in the field. On the drop of the green Arthur rocketed to the lead with Roland Mann, Tom Cohick and Stephen Evans going three wide for third behind Matt Morgan in second.

On lap 8 Evans took third from Mann and the Morgan for second. By lap 18 Evans had closed in on Arthur as they began to work slower traffic. By lap 20 Evans was on the bumper of Arthur finally taking over the top spot with a slide job in turn 3 on lap 25.

Evans began to pull away as Arthur battled Cohick for second. On lap 32 Stevie Long began working Cohick for third getting by the position on lap 33. On lap 36 Evans blew a motor in turn 4 handing the lead back to Arthur. On the restart Long tried to slide under Arthur in turn 1 for the lead but Arthur powered out of turn 2 to maintain the lead and go on to capture the victory and Championship. Long would fall back with a front right tire going down.

Following Arthur to the checkers were Sommey Lacey, Tom Cohick, Neil McClanan and Anthony Kincaid. Ben Bowie was the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race with his sixth place finish.
