Chico, CA — September 6, 2008 — Jac Haudenschild certainly knows how to put on a show in the Gold Cup Race of Champions at Silver Dollar Speedway. Just one night after a runner-up finish in which he used every inch of the race track as battled Jason Meyers for the win, he put on another show on Saturday night first tracking down Meyers and then, holding off a furious late race charge by Craig Dollansky to earn his third career victory in the famed event, which again paid $50,000 to win this season.

Haudenschild started third and patiently shadowed Dollansky early in the race before getting around him on the 16th lap to take the runner-up spot. He then closed in on Meyers a number of times as the lead pair approached lapped traffic. On the 26th lap, Meyers had nowhere to go when a lapped machine got into him, causing him to spin and giving the lead to Haudenschild.

The veteran driver would lead the remaining 15 laps and held off Dollansky on the last lap to pick up his seventh career win at Silver Dollar Speedway. It was his second Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series A-Feature win of the season and the 48th of his career.

"The car felt really good," said Haudenschild after climbing from his Owens-Corning Fiberglass Maxim. "We were fast yesterday in the main and carried that over to tonight. I’m glad to win another Gold Cup. I always enjoy racing here and we always seem to be pretty fast here. It’s nice to win 50-grand as well. The other ones I won paid 20-grand."

Meyers who started second aboard the GLR Investments KPC led at the drop of the green, and quickly opened about an eight car length lead over Dollansky, before a red flag period on the third lap. Dollansky dove to the low side of the track on the ensuing restart as he looked for a way around the leader. Meyers continued to maintain his lead.

Each time the leaders entered lapped traffic, Dollansky was able to close in on Meyers as both drivers battled for their first career Gold Cup wins. The caution flag flew three times as the leader were either in traffic or approaching traffic, giving them open track to work with.

Haudenschild started third and powered his way around Dollansky on the high side of turn four on the 16th lap, as the latter was held up in heavy traffic. Just one lap later as the leaders negotiated their way through traffic, the fourth caution of the night flew for Donny Schatz, who had trouble in turn four, which ended his night. On the restart, Haudenschild looked under Meyers as the duo exited the fourth turn.

"The bottom was faster earlier in the race and then it went to the top in the second half," Haudenschild noted. "The track was real nice all night. They did a great job preparing it."

Haudenschild was running second when Meyers was attempting to lap Jesse Hockett who was competing in his first Gold Cup, when contact sent Meyers spinning, relegating him to a 20th-place finish as he chases his first Gold Cup. Just one lap before that, Dollansky inched ahead of Haudenschild for second, but by the time they crossed the line, it was Haudenschild surging back into the runner-up spot.

"I was definitely close to that," admitted Haudenschild, when asked about the spin in front of him. "I just about got tangled up in that and was able to get around it. Sometimes the cautions help you and sometimes they hurt you and tonight I think they helped me some."

Dollansky gave it everything he had in the Snap-on Tools Maxim as he tried to track down Haudenschild late in the race. He used the extreme high side of the track in turns one and two and gained a significant amount of ground on the back straightaway heading into turns three and four with the $50,000 top prize on the line. He charged to the high side of turns three and four and was nearly event with Haudenschild on the front straightaway as the paired charged to the checkered flag. He wound up just 0.225 seconds behind Haudenschild at the line.

"I came up a little short," said Dollansky. "It was going to get interesting if there had been one more lap. I got a good run on him and he kind of came across the bottom on me. I really thought we were going to drive right by him. He got across the line first and my hat is off to him and his team. They did a great job and he had a good race car."

Jonathan Allard finished a very strong third for the second consecutive night aboard the K&N Filters Maxim. He lined up third and lost a spot to Haudenschild on the 10th lap, before moving up one position when Meyers had his misfortune.

"We’re really happy," said Allard before his hometown crowd. "The car was perfect. I was just being patient and waiting to get back in lapped traffic. I didn’t want to make any mistakes and cost ourselves a good race. In lapped traffic, I was able to get up next to both of them and I thought we were a little better, but we got strung out and there is no sense in taking away what you have."

Brent Kaeding followed up a podium finish on Friday night with a very solid fourth-place performance on Saturday night aboard the Al’s Roofing Supply Maxim. Sammy Swindell, the three-time World of Outlaw champion finished fifth in the Tom Rolfe Trucking Maxim. Paul McMahan was sixth piloting the Casey’s General Store Maxim, with Steve Kinser earning the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award after starting 19th and finishing seventh in the Q Oil Maxim. Daryn Pittman was eighth in the Titan Garages Maxim, with Kraig Kinser in ninth driving the Bass Pro Shops Maxim. Chad Kemenah rounded out the Top-10 in the Kantor Oil Company Maxim.

Dollansky, who won the opening night of the 55th Annual Gold Cup on Thursday night was able to keep pace with Meyers early in the race in traffic and again late in the contest was able to make up ground on Haudenschild when they were negotiating the slower machines.

"We really needed to stay in lapped traffic, but it didn’t work out that way tonight," he shared. "Every time we got to it, it seemed like the yellow came out. Even at the end, I was hoping we would get to traffic, but we didn’t get there quick enough to mix it up. We’ll just have to come back and try to get this next year."

Dollansky lined up second on a couple of late restarts, including one with 13 laps to go which followed a fuel stop. Haudenschild had strong starts on both and quickly jumped to a comfortable lead.

"I just had to drive my line and see what line he was taking and try to make something happen," said Dollansky. "We went up top late and that seemed to work really well for me, and he got a little loose on the bottom. It was a good race."

Allard, who has won over 30 times in his career at Silver Dollar Speedway was thrilled to be standing on the podium with the two veteran drivers at the end of the 55th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions. He has 12 Top-Five finishes this season at his home track.

"I have grown as a race car driver and we have a heck of a team here," explained Allard. "Maybe a couple of years ago, I would have blown it off at the end trying something. I’m glad to be up here in the Top-Three. The team deserves to be in the Top-three every night no matter where we go, because they work so hard."

Like Dollansky, Allard would not have minded having some longer green flag runs, as his car was also operating very well in lapped traffic. Toward the halfway point of the 40-lap contest, Allard was all over Dollansky as they fought for the third spot.

"We got bottled up and I was sticking to the bottom," he noted. "We were a little freer than they were and when they got slower, we were better. I’m just happy with how we did."

The Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series returns to action on Wednesday, September 10 at Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer, Iowa.
