Savannah, GA - Springfield’s Bobby Taylor nearly clean swept the inaugural “ Turkey Trot 300” at Oglethorpe Speedway Park.
Taylor won three main events for the Go Karts with victories in the Stock Light, Stock Medium and Senior Stock Heavy divisions. He was fastest qualifier on Friday afternoon for all but one division also picked up one heat race win on his way to Saturday’s big day.
“The track was incredible Saturday,” said Taylor after clearing a post race teardown by the certified tech staff. “The groove was three and four karts wide all the way around. You could really race with each other.”
Taylor picked up a $300 pay day after beating Tim Broschard to the line for the victory in Saturday’s 30-lap main event for the Stock Medium. Junior Morris ended up third ahead of Daniel Meador and Ronnie Rushing. They were the only five remaining on the lead lap as Taylor dominated the fifteen kart starting field.
Fifteen-year-old Darrell Williams held off Taylor for the first half of the race in the Stock Light division. Taylor worked the young gun before making a slick move out of turn four to overtake the lead. He never looked back posting the victory ahead of Williams, Krystle Wolfe, Daniel Meador and Eddie Morris.
The combining of Senior Stock and Stock Heavy proved to be in favor of Taylor as well. He battled with Ricky Pitts for the first few laps before passing him and then cruising to his third feature win of the day. Pitts ended up second followed by TJ White, Matthew Donahue and Dennis Acker.
Sixteen-year-old Oglethorpe Speedway Park late model driver Steven Howard of Bloomingdale returned to his go kart racing roots for the second straight week. Howard took advantage of some late race misfortunes and won the $150 top prize in the Outlaws feature. A wild race featuring fourteen fast karters had a number of spin outs, crashes into the haybales and passing. But when the dust had settled, Howard was in victory lane. Eddie Morris ended up second ahead of Shawn O’Rourke, David Johnikin, Jr. and Bubba Sapp. Tim Broschard, Gump Wells, Travis Young, Sr., Mark Figueroa and Casey Lee rounded out the top ten from Saturday’s Outlaws feature.
Pooler’s 10-year-old Casey Coker continued his winning ways on Saturday. The young hot shoe won the Rookie I feature for the second straight week and also jumped up to the Rookie II division to claim the “Turkey Trot 300” title for that class. Austin Pitts and Anna Singleton finshed second and third to Coker in the Rookie I while Tyler Perry and Destiny Dalton were second and third for the Rookie II division.
Daniel Brown won the slim field of Junior Unrestricteds on Saturday completing the first ever “Turkey Trot 300” for the go kart racers at OSP.
The 5th Annual Go Kart Winter Shoot-Out Series returns to points racing this Saturday, December 3rd. All divisions including the Kiddie Karts will be competing. The series also has events slated for December 10, 17 and 31.
The gates open at 11:30am, practice starts at noon with racing at 2:00pm. Grandstand admission is free.
