Savannah, GA - Clint Sills of Rincon, GA, took advantage of former two-time Showdown on the Coast champion Brian Barnes misfortune to win the first of two rounds for the Super Street Stock division. Guyton’s Bobby Morris also won the Mini Stock Showdown on the Coast feature for the third time while Charissa Dudley won the Queen Bee main event. In National Late Model qualifying, Swainsboro’s Chesley Dixon blistered the track record with a 19.131 second lap (117.61 mph). It was only a tenth of a second faster than Indiantown, FL, hot shoe Patrick “Showtime” Sheltra while perennial favorites Ivedent Lloyd, DeWayne Johnson and Bobby Oglesby slipped down the line-up.
“We hit our marks perfectly,” said Dixon. “The track was perfect. It’s awesome to have the best shot at starting on the pole Saturday night.” The first round of the Super Street Stock races at the Showdown on the Coast looked to be Brian Barnes’ race. He took the lead at the drop of the green and powered to a car length and half lead over Clint Sills before breaking a gear with five laps remaining. Sills shot past to snare the lead and then went on to claim the first of two main events for the Super Street Stock division at the Showdown on the Coast.
The 2005 Sunset Novelties Mini Stock champion Charles Swann crossed the finish line first on Thursday night, but his car did not pass the post race inspection. Second place finisher Bobby Morris was declared the winner giving him his third Showdown on the Coast victory during it’s eight year duration. Swainsboro’s Bobby McKenzie ended up second ahead of Randall Wegmann who led the first eight laps of the feature race.
The National Late Models completed an exciting opening night for Oglethorpe Speedway Park’s Fall Festival of Speed. Swainsboro’s Chesley Dixon nipped Florida’s Patrick Sheltra in a record setting lap. The 117 mile-per-hour lap gives Dixon the best opportunity to start on the pole for Saturday night’s “ Budwesier 150”. Oglethorpe Speedway Park hosts the second night of the Showdown on the Coast this evening. Drivers from over 1,500 miles away are in attendance for this weekend’s racing action. The pits have swelled to well over 225 cars in attendance chasing the $70,000 in purse offered this weekend at the historic half mile just west of downtown Savannah.
