O'REILLY SAS SUPERTRUCK

Wainwright Takes Birmingham SuperTruck Win
By Mark Chisum

BIRMINGHAM, AL--This past February, Jeff Wainwright charged from the fifth starting spot, took the lead on the 11th lap, and led the rest of the way to win the O'Reilly Southern All Star SuperTruck Series Earlybird 100 at Birmingham International Raceway. The series returned to the venerable oval Friday with Wainwright scoring another win. This time around, it was even easier than the first. Wainwright set fast time in qualifying with a lap of 22.343. Things fell right into place as Wainwright drew a two on the inversion draw, putting Wainwright on the outside front row. With the preferred position, it didn't take Wainwright long to grab the lead. Kevin Barrett was able to stay even with for one lap, but Wainwright cleared Barrett as they entered turn one of the second lap. That was as close as anyone would get to Wainwright the rest of the night. Chris Serio, starting sixth, had a fast truck from the start, quickly moving into the top three. With the racing behind him, Wainwright was able to build on his lead. Wainwright held a healthy lead over Barrett, Serio, Johns, and Okie Mason when the first caution flew on lap 27.
The field settled for a long green period, which lasted for 56 laps. Serio began pressuring Barrett for the second spot. Serio was able to pull even with Barrett going into the turns, but Barrett, on the outside, was able to power back ahead coming off of the turns. Finally, on lap 53, Serio was able to slide in front of Barrett in turn two to claim the spot.
That was as far as Serio could go, however. Wainwright, enjoying a big lead, was hooked up and cruising. Serio's last two shot's came with two late cautions. Each time, Wainwright jumped ahead of Serio by a couple of truck lengths. Wainwright was able to pull away, leaving Serio and the rest of the field running for second. Wainwright led Serio to the checkered flag with Barrett third, Richard Johns fourth, and Shannon Berry fifth. The official order of finish changed after the race when Serio's ride failed post race inspection, moving Barrett to second, Johns to third, Berry to fourth, and Josh Adkins to fifth. Sixth through tenth went to Jeff Lawley, Spencer Teal, Greg Motes, Mason, and John Shuffler. In the series' points race, Teal holds a two point advantage over Adkins. Mason is third, just six points behind the leader. Johns is fourth, 24 points back. After seven races in the past eight weeks, the series will take a well deserved five-week break.

The next scheduled race is July 24
100-lapper at Huntsville Speedway.
