Florida Racers Show Well At East Alabama NLMS Corteco Sponsored Race

BY STEVE A. HOWELL

Phenix City, AL. Dewayne Johnson would take the win at East Alabama Speedway Saturday night while Michael Lloyd scores the win at Penton Speedway on Friday.

With over 25 Corteco late models on hand Friday night for the bull-ringof Penton Speedway for the fifty lap feature. Lawton Minchew of Deland FL. would take the Jameson Inns A-Perfect Lap- Deserves A-Perfect Stay Award just edging out two-time NLMS Champion Ivedent Lloyd of Ocala (FL) to start on the front row of the fifty lap feature. For Minchew, that lap would be his best lap of the weekend as on the first lap of the feature he, along with Lloyd, would check up going into turn one and be passed by the cars of Jeff Fortner and Michael Lloyd. Fortner would take the point as Minchew would not be able to recover his ill-handling mount.
Fortner would lead with Michael Lloyd glued to his rear until lap 36 when the leader would encounter lap traffic. Fortner would move to the inside and Michael would move to the high side.

Dewayne Johnson of near-by Columbus (GA) who traveled the entire 2003 season with the NLMS, finished the year fourth in the points, led races, but was never able to get the win, would do so Saturday night and do it in style. For Johnson, who would become the newest first-time feature winner with the The Southern Dirt Tour, would lose a motor early in qualifying on Friday night. The crew would make the change before the feature and Johnson would rally from last of the twenty-six car field to finish in the top ten.

Johnson would then be the last of 39 NLMS late models to enter on Saturday night, then blister the track in Jameson Inn Qualifying to claim the pole for the fifty lap feature. Johnson would edge out Mike Parkerson with those two on the front row of the feature. Johnson would take the lead with Parkerson in a close second. Dana Eiland would move into third with Ivedent Lloyd in fourth. Parkerson would hold onto the second position with Eiland in third Ivedent Lloyd in fourth, Michael Lloyd in fifth.

With only 6 laps remaining Ivedent Lloyd, defending winner of the race, would move into second. Dewayne would take the green and lead the final six laps to take his first feature win with the series.

"Man this great, Matt and myself chased this all last year and wanted one bad, now tonight we get it done," said Johnson, continuing, "I wanted to be a part of the B&K Sportswear Dash for Cashlast year and now we are in it." The B&K Sportswear Dash for Cash is the NLMS Feature Winners All-Star race held at Swainsboro Raceway during the Turkey 100 in November.

Next on the schedule will be Modoc Speedway located in Modoc South Carolina, on April 9th, then I-20 Speedway in Batesville SC on April 10th.
