Pendleton, Ind. (August 26, 2003) – Despite his involvement in an altercation on lap 76 that sent Kevin Cywinski spinning into the turn 3 wall, the current point’s leader responded to post eighth place honors on Sunday, August 24 in the Erie 250 at Lake
Erie Speedway. Three-time ASA National Champion Butch Miller finished in second, shrinking the margin between the top two positions by 27 markers. After 13 of 17 events in the 2003 ASA Racing Series season, Cywinski has a 102-point lead on Miller.

Through 13 events, Cywinski has collected 10 top-five finishes and 12 top 10s. During the first half of season, the driver of the SK Hand Tool / Great Clips Chevrolet initially won at Houston Motor Speedway in Texas and added a second trip to the winner’s circle at the Mansfield Motorsports Speedway in Ohio. The Wausau, Wis., competitor added his first victory during the second half of the season, taking the checkers at Jennerstown, Pa. in a rain-shortened 137 lap event.

Miller continues to hold the second position in the standings, scoring his most recent victory at Madison International Speedway in the BFGoodrich Tires 250 on Friday, July
18. The pilot of the Timber Wolf sponsored-car owned by Indianapolis-based SS Racing began the season with a win at USA International Speedway and followed up that stellar performance, earning a second trip to the winner’s circle at Toledo Speedway. Miller has collected 11 top-10 finishes and three poles.

$50,000 Rookie of the Year point’s leader Reed Sorenson is third, with his 11th top-10 finish in the inaugural event at Lake Erie. Driving the ACDelco/Port City Racecars/Tilton Engineering Chevrolet, Sorenson has produced a best finish of third on two occasions, initially at USA International Speedway in March and most recently at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in May. He leads Florida’s Travis Kittleson by 235 markers in the rookie standings. Sorenson qualified in second spot at Lake Erie, marking the fifth time he has started on the front row in 2003.

Making a late-race charge at Lake Erie, Mike Garvey tallied his seventh top-five finish of 2003. With backing from Jani-King, Garvey has scored three victories this season, ranking fourth in the standings. He initially won at Lanier National Speedway in Georgia and then added back-to-back wins in June at Hawkeye Downs Speedway and I-70 Speedway.

After taking the checkers in Erie, Pa., Ohio’s Robbie Pyle is fifth in the point standings. Driving for Wal Tom Racing of Chicago, Pyle has collected six finishes in the top five including a victory and four additional podiums.

Freshman competitor Travis Kittleson remains sixth after finishing 13th in the Erie 250. Second-year racer Todd Kluever is seventh with 1995 ASA National Champion Bryan Reffner in eighth position. Two-time 2003 event winner Peter Cozzolino sits ninth with
fourth place Erie finisher Rick Beebe rounding out the top 10.

The 14th event of the 2003 ASA Racing Series is set for Monday, September 1 at Elko Speedway in Elko, Minn. The Greased Lightning Orange Blast 400 takes the green flag at 1:30 p.m. (Local) and will be telecast live on SPEED Channel.
