Pendleton, Ind. (August 20, 2003) – Since making a Minnesota debut in September of 1978, the ASA Racing Series has been a regular fixture in the land of 10 thousands lakes. The series that builds champions has placed the Labor Day Classic at Elko
Speedway in 2003, carrying on the prestigious history of the event that was built at Minnesota State Fair Speedway.

Wisconsin’s Larry Detjens scored the first victory, holding off Mike Miller and Mark Martin at Minnesota State Fair Park Speedway. Two-time ASA National Champion Dick Trickle and 21-time event winner Scott Hansen enjoyed the most success in the
traditional event, with Trickle winning four events and Hansen receiving three trips to the winner’s circle.

Completing a late-race pass on seven-time series champion Mike Eddy, ensured the first victory for Trickle. He finished ahead of 1983 ASA Titlist Rusty Wallace and Eddy at the conclusion of the 300 lap affair.

Turing in a dominating performance, Trickle initially grabbed the pole position and then led 230 of the 300 laps in September of 1987. The pilot of the Coors Light Silver Bullet Chevrolet finished .28 seconds in front of Ted Margrave and Detroit’s Harold Fair.

After out-dueling Hansen, Trickle earned a third victory in the Labor Day Classic. He got around Hansen on the 259th go-around, then leading the final 42 circuits. He earned a payday of $11,795 in the $100,150 in posted awards. Hansen finished second with
Senneker filling out the podium.

Posting a second consecutive win, Trickle got by 1993 ASA National Champion Johnny Benson Jr. with 20 laps remaining. Trickle finished 1.87 seconds ahead of Benson with Tennessee racer Tom Harrington in third.

Collecting his second victory during his 1989 rookie season and first in the Labor Day Classic, Hansen dominated the final 81 laps of the event at Minnesota State Fair Speedway. A hard-charging Bob Senneker was second with Joe Shear and Rich Bickle close behind.

Controlling the last portion of the event at Minnesota State Fair Speedway in 1997, Hansen returned to the winner’s circle. He finished .199 seconds ahead of 1996 ASA National Champion Tony Raines and 1997 ASA Rookie of the Year Steve Carlson.

Winning his second consecutive Labor Day Classic event, Hansen drove the Schrader Racing Chevrolet to victory in 1998. Two-time series champion Gary St. Amant placed second with Raines finishing in third.

Eddy, Butch Miller, Mike Miller and Bob Senneker scored two victories in the Labor Day event with Benson, Kevin Cywinski, Larry Detjens, Tristan Dupuis, Mike Garvey, Bobby Gill, Butch Lindley, Mark Martin, Jim Sauter and Gary St. Amant all single-event winners.


The Greased Lightning Orange Blast 400 on Monday, September 1 serves as a centerpiece to a host of other racing activities during the holiday weekend.

The Impact Racing National Pit Stop Challenge presented by BFGoodrich Tires and SK Hand Tool will be take place on Saturday and Sunday on Labor Day Weekend. In the opening round held at Burnsville Shopping Center from 2-5 p.m., all teams are invited to partake in this competition showcasing the pit crews. The top-10 finishing teams will compete in the championship round at Elko Speedway on Sunday evening, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The Pit Stop Challenge has total cash awards of $5,000 and additional product prizes.

On Sunday at Elko, MARS and ASA begin practice starting at 11:30 a.m. ASA will set the field for the 400-lap event on Monday with pole qualifying at 4:30 p.m. with MARS qualifying taking place at 6. The Impact Racing National Pit Stop Challenge
presented by BFGoodrich Tires and SK Hand Tool rolls off at 7:30 with the 100-lap MARS event going green at 9. On Monday, ASA’s on-track fan autograph session and live musical entertainment are scheduled for noon with pre-race ceremonies set for
noon. The Greased Lightning Orange Blast 400 goes green at 1:30. (Local).

Tickets for the Greased Lightning Orange Blast 400 at Elko are $25 each in advance and $30 on race day. Children 12 years old and younger are admitted free with a paying adult. Tickets on Sunday for the 100-lap MARS late model event and ASA pole
