| Joel Kauffman's ProCup Woes Continue | Mooresville, NC — If Joel Kauffman was superstitious, the Hooters Pro Cup driver might think that he had walked under a ladder while a black cat was crossing his path. For the third event in a row, Kauffman had a great run ruined by something beyond his control. The Indiana native had engine trouble spoil great efforts at IRP and Jennerstown. At Mansfield, the problem was a lapped car.
The day started out on a good note, with Kauffman qualifying second on the grid. The No. 44 RMI/Hare Auto Pontiac ran in the top five until pitting at the midpoint of the race. Kauffman quickly got back in the top five and seemed to be headed toward the front. However, contact with Robbie Marhefka going into turn one effectively ended the day for Kauffman and his crew.
"It just seems like we can’t catch a break," Kauffman stated. "This is the third race in a row where we’ve had a great car and came away with nothing to show for our efforts. I’m not sure what the No. 12 was thinking. He was five laps down and ended up taking us out. It seemed like everyone was racing a lot harder than usual."
The race was marked by heavy contact between the competitors. Kauffman thought the heat might have affected the drivers’ tempers.
"People were banging on each other all night," said Kauffman. "It was hot all day, as well as during the race, and I think the heat made a lot of the guys impatient. We just have to put this race behind us and get ready for Erie. We know that we’ve got fast cars, we just have to have some good luck."
