Justin Larson Has Memorable Visit to Bristol Motor Speedway
|
ASA Late Model Series PR
Racing is a funny thing. It is one of the few venues in life where an athlete can experience an incredible high only to have it snatched away seconds later. Justin Larson experienced this first hand at Bristol Motor Speedway.
A regular competitor in the ASA Late Model Series Southern Division, Larson opted for a different ride at Bristol. Rather than the familiar white and green Skinner Nurseries Chevrolet, the 88 team arrived at Bristol with the same black Ford Larson campaigned at Concord Motorsports Park. If practice speeds were any indication the decision paid off.
All eyes in the Bristol infield were on Larson as ARP Bodies qualifying began. The Skin...

Gail O'Doski, A Bartow Legend Dies
|
by Bill Green Gail O'Doski is not a household name, but is best remembered by local race fans for his marketing work for a young talented Bartow, Florida stock car racer named Rick Wilson. Some local Bartow natives will remember a young Gail O'Doski as the voice of Polk county AM radio station WBAR before he become it's general manager in the late sixties. But his closest friends remember a loving family man, who's real passion was in his music and his racing. Neither of which he would ever strayed to far from. Gail O'Doski became addicted to stock car racing the first time he visited Sebring Raceway in 1958. That was the night he snuck out onto the race track in his own 1958 Dodge Desoto Firedome two door hardtop. He almost completed the 3.7 mile road course, but th...

My Own Creek in the Frontyard
|
by Jane Smith
I love living on Merritt Island surrounded by water with the Indian River, Banana River and Sykes Creek. But thanks to Fay, I have my own Jane Smith Waterway and it is something I am not sure I do like. Although I am lucky to live in a non-flood zone, constant rain can cause you have to your own creek whether you want it or not.
So far I have not left my house since Tuesday since the winds like my little car and blow her around alot. Alot of the streets in my neighborhood are not flood free and are under water so the odds are you going to drown your engine trying to just get to the 7-11.
I have seen some unwanted creatures all around - snakes mainly who are askin...

Mark Gimmler Takes Wingless Sprint Win At Citrus County
|
By Curtis Whalin
The Checked Flag Sprint Series (CFSS) made its first appearance of the year at Citrus County Speedway in Inverness on Saturday August 16, with a 35 lap feature race. This was the first race outside of Charlotte County Motorsports Park for the series and 16 cars made the trip to be in the race.
There were two heat races. The 15 car driven by Jason Gillespie was smoking during the hot laps for the first heat and had to pull off before the start of the heat race with an oil leak. Darrin Miller in his 21 car started heat one, the Landrum Spring Heat, in the pole position with the79DD of Dakotah Stephens on the outside.
The 21 took the lead from the green flag a...

Johnny Collins wins the battle on the blacktop at CCMP
|
BY Rob Shore
As far as the main event went Saturday night, it's safe to say this was an upset. A Michael Phelps losing to a toddler inwater wings sort of an upset.
Not that the winner of the inaugural "Battle on the Blacktop" was a surprise, since winner Johnny Collins was the United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series' point leader. But that it would come in 13 minutes — a staggeringly quick time for a 50-lap feature — and that it would come without a single caution.
Without the cautions, the Jacksonville resident's quarter-lap margin of victory at Charlotte County Motorsports Park truly reflected how he dominated.
“I would never have expected that many green-flag laps,”...

ORLANDO SPEEDWORLD HOSTS FIREFIGHTERS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS
|
By Dave Westerman
Friday night will be a very special evening at Orlando Speedworld as the track will host a large group of local area firefighters, rangers and law enforcement officers who will be in attendance supporting one of their own, Orange County firefighter Stephen Kibler.
Like most parents, Stephen and Jannae Kibler experienced the happiest day of their lives when their only son, Camden, was born on February 28, 2008. Camden came into this world as a beautiful, healthy baby boy.
At less than 2 months old, Camden's eyes began to develop tumors. The family was referred to a specialist in Miami where Camden was diagnosed with Juvenile Xanthogranuloma (JXG). Camden began receiving injections in his eyes in hopes of reducing the tumors and saving him fro...

Dusty Cone Wins Wild One at Waycross
|
By Rick Anges
Waycross, Ga. The teams of the United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series rolled into the Historic oil based ˝ mile of Waycross Motor Speedway for race number nine of the season.
Just as the last group of the UDLMCS was getting ready for their first practice a monsoon like rainstorm swept over the track. The rain caused over an hour and a half delay on the nights events.
The surface was almost similar to an asphalt track and the speeds showed it. Twenty-eight teams took the track for qualifying for the nights fifty lap Scotbilt Homes Classic.
Several cars dipped into sixteen-second range. Dusty Cone looked like he would come away as the Zeigler Racing En...

I Survived Bristol Speedway
|
Editors Note: Drew Brannon made his first visit to Bristol Motor Speedway this past weekend, and survived with a 10th place finish in the ASA Late Models. The teenager from Miami tells his story in the following narrative. Hope you enjoy it.
By Drew Brannon
Friday we were searching for the set up. We still did not get it as good as I had wanted it. Although, I felt I had a better car than they way I qualified. The track is so intense and we were noticing that our tires after 20-30 laps were coming apart which made me very concerned.
We started the race 14th and quickly moved up to 11th position. I used up my tires trying to pass a slower car so around lap 30 my car started to vibrate...

ANDERSON AND JEFFERSON COME OUT ON TOP AT CCMP
|

BY Linda Jericka
No one thought that there would be any racing going on sat at Charlotte county motorsports park with the rain starting so early, except owner Bobby Diehl who said have faith we are going to go racing. It started with Friday nights practice when so many Supers and Open wheels showed up to test and tune and then staying over night, the pits were half full to start the day off, so no one wanted to cancel.
Well the rain stopped and the sun came out and it was once again a hot night of racing at the 3/8 mile track in Punta Gorda. The night started out with the mini Stock running a make up race which saw the 30 car of Robert Carter the winner and the 54 of Ricky...

David Rogers takes FINAL Checkered Flag at USA International
|
by Jane Smith
Lakeland, FL (August 3, 2008) Some came because they love Lakeland, others came because they wanted to race Lakeland one last time, and a few just wanted to say they had raced at USA International on it's closing night.
Saturday was a typical day at USA International for late summer - HOT. A few dark clouds brought a short cool breeze but no rain as fans and racers faced the heat one last time at USA International. It was a good day and a sad day for everyone.
Thirty two Super Late Models qualified for the last time at USA. Tim Russell of Longwood set fast time with a 20.931 lap followed by Jeff Scofeld of Plant City with a 21.073, Travis Cope of Hernan...

David Rogers Finally Conquers USA International Speedway

The Southeast's finest short track is gone
By Jack Smith

Sitting on the wall with David Rogers at USA International Speedway 5 PM - "It is a shame that is going away. It is kind of sad......I have had some good nights here, I've never won a race here, I've had some good cars, but for whatever reason, things just didn't work out....."
"Over the years I've raced with lots of good people....it would be great to win the last one, you know it is going away and that's one of them records they can't break, like when we won the National Championship, we won 22 out of 22...."
"If I win the last one and they tear it up next week, at least that part will be known."...
