To Karla, Billy, Mom and all of Wild Bill's loved ones,

Our deepest sympathy to you all, our thoughts and prayers are with you during this tragic time. This is the part of life I find so hard to understand. It does not seem right to lose those we love so much. The pain and grief is so hard to overcome. We will truly miss Wild Bill. He was such a kind person, and like everyone seems to agree on, one who always had a smile on his face. He had such a laid back, calm presence, that was truly unique.

We often enjoyed his company after the race when he would come over to talk. We will never forget his response to the announcer after winning a race. He told the crowd, when the announcer commented about his car, "It's not a beauty contest".

Art and Bill had some things in common, such as their kindness and concern for others, and their feeling of "That's racing" and "there is always next week" never looking to start any trouble after a race, but instead being calm, cool and collective.

Apparently, Wild Bill has won the last 3 Winternational Figure 8 races, and Art has finished 2nd in all 3 Winternational races right behind Bill. I know for a fact this coming 2000 Winternational Figure 8 event, Art would much rather finish behind Wild Bill one more time than win this special race of the year.

Everyone always asks me "how can you stand to watch your husband race Figure 8?", and I always reply "He has been doing it a long time and he has lots of experience". Well, I guess I had better find a new line and come to realize my children and I have just been very lucky. I have watched Art race over 560 races (1983 - 1999) that's over 17,500 times through the intersection. The most injury Art has received at the races, I believe, is when someone jumped him in the pits, made him fall to the ground and injured his thumb, which has not been the same since.

Again, our sympathy, thoughts and prayers are with you all,

Sincerely,
Art & Julia Calkins
Your Figure 8 family
